Nothing middling about Midtown

Over the past decade, Oklahoma City’s Midtown has developed into a bustling district with local retail and that momentum doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

Midtown District is centered around Walker Avenue and 10th Street, near St. Anthony Hospital, the city’s first hospital. Midtown connects the energy of downtown with beautiful, historic neighborhoods to its north.

The lively area continues to develop for people who want to live, work and play in the heart of Oklahoma City, and features housing, retail, night life, hotels and history, with many of its original buildings being brought back to life. The heart of the district is Plaza Court, an 84-year-old building that features some of OKC’s favorite restaurants, bars and local shopping options.

Public and private investments have created a thriving district of diversity within its 387 acres. The city’s first grocery store and kindergarten were located in Midtown, while surviving territorial Victorian homes and a strong restaurant and night-life scene comprise the current district. Midtown continues to be an urban center in its current-day renaissance as it is one of the hubs of downtown living with a plethora of urban housing recently opened, under construction or announced.

Film Row is blending the past with the future

Film Row OKC

While many of Oklahoma City’s urban districts have undergone unbelievable changes over the past decade, Film Row might take home the prize for most improved.

Starting in 1907, what is now known as Film Row was home to film exchange distribution offices, a place where movie theater owners could return old films and exchange them for new releases. By the 1960s, every major film studio was represented in the area (along with theater supply stores), but changing technologies caused the industry to disintegrate, leaving Oklahoma City with the last remaining film exchange district in the U.S.

Thankfully, Film Row has experienced a rebirth that deeply respects its cinematic history. Boasting a unique mix of creative companies, restaurants and retail means that this district has plenty of opportunities to enjoy. Today, you can catch a live music at The Jones Assembly (as well as enjoy their great food and drinks), buy succulent plants while sipping on coffee at the Plant Shoppe/Okay Yeah Co., or grab a drink and view the art galleries at 21c Museum Hotel Oklahoma City.

The most exciting thing about this district? It’s just getting started. The West Village development is currently under construction and will bring a mix of housing, retail, office space and another live music venue to the area. Nearly 350 housing units are part of the project and will bring even more life to this thriving district.

Paseo Arts District

What do you get when you combine the oldest planned commercial shopping district in Oklahoma City with a creative community? The Paseo Arts District, of course. The winding streets and original Spanish-style stucco buildings are home for the art galleries and studios that give this district so much artistic flair. Perfect for a meandering walk, the Paseo Arts District is also home to some of Oklahoma City’s best restaurants and bars, including Paseo Grill, Sauced on Paseo and others. Its proximity to the Uptown 23rd District and the historic housing options available nearby, including single-family homes and apartments, make this a walkable neighborhood with a community atmosphere.

Each May, the district holds its annual Paseo Arts Festival which routinely draws more than 60,000 visitors to enjoy art, music and food. The 42nd annual Paseo Arts Festival will take place May 26 – May 28 this year.

On the first Friday of each month, the Paseo cranks up the hospitality with the First Friday Gallery Walk, in which more than 80 neighborhood artists show off their wares amid a blocks-long party of music, food and fun.

Downtown digs

Deep Deuce neighborhood

Everything is waiting for you downtown. Do you fancy the idea of being surrounded by community amenities and leaving the car in the garage and just walking to work, the movies, the museum, the Myriad Gardens or to your neighborhood “watering hole”* without having to worry about parking, traffic or all the other headaches inherent to getting behind the wheel? Downtown offers plenty of neighborhoods, both established and up-and-coming, to consider if you’re looking at a move. And you’re not alone, with downtown population increasing more than 15 percent since 2000 and more than 1,000 new units either under construction or planned.

Historic neighborhood highlights

Heritage Hills

Did you know Mesta Park got its name from one-time resident Perle Mesta, the so-called “hostess with the mostest” and well-known foreign ambassador, socialite and daughter of William P. Skirvin? How about that Jefferson Park wasn’t actually annexed by Oklahoma City until 1908? Similarly, did you know that the Overholser Mansion, along with the rest of Heritage Hills, was once considered “out in the country” when it was built in 1903, and was so-named because it was built over a series of holes*? And did you know that the Paseo Arts District was actually originally developed to be the first “shopping center” north of downtown in 1929? With some fantastic (and sometimes legendary) history and intrigue behind them, some of the most sought-after areas of OKC to live in are also (unsurprisingly) among the oldest! Nothing quite compares to the tree-lined charm and close community connections inherent to living in Oklahoma City’s historic neighborhoods. A wealth of great housing stock to choose from is typical of these areas, as are sidewalks, parks, supportive neighborhood associations, a sometimes wacky Nextdoor experience, and squirrels. Deep Deuce

Deep Deuce neighborhood

Located in the heart of downtown, the Deep Deuce District is one of the most historically significant areas of Oklahoma City and now a key urban center for the metro.

First the history, as the Deep Deuce was the home for African-American culture in Oklahoma City for decades. The district was a regional hub for jazz music in the 40s and home to legends like Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Charlie Christian and Jimmy Rushing. Oklahoma City native and literary giant Ralph Ellison even wrote a tribute to the district in his poem entitled “Deep Second”.

Recently the district has seen remarkable investment and redevelopment. Today you can find great restaurants and much of the city’s urban housing developments, making it the center for urban living in OKC.

Digging downtown

With entertainment, arts, sporting events and nightlife all in your backyard, it is no surprise that downtown Oklahoma City living is booming. With housing options as diverse as the individuals that live in them, downtown Oklahoma City dwelling will give you the urban adventure that you’ve always wanted.

In downtown Oklahoma City, there are a total of 2,880 housing units, with nearly 2,000 more under construction or announced. Blast from the past

House in Heritage Hills

You already know that Oklahoma City has plenty of character, and that is especially evident in the historic neighborhoods throughout the city. Tree-lined streets, peaceful front-porches and beautiful architecture all abound within close proximity to downtown and to several of Oklahoma City’s most popular districts.

Crown Heights
Crown Heights is an attractive Historic Preservation District consisting of homes dating from the 30s. Its mix of Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, Mission-Spanish, Monterey, French Eclectic, Minimal Traditional and Art Deco styles combine with characteristic landscaping and a trendy location (bordering Western Avenue shopping and dining, near Asian District, midtown, downtown) to create one of Oklahoma City's premier historic neighborhoods.

Mesta Park/Heritage Hills
Home to many of Oklahoma City's founding elite, the neighborhoods just north of downtown, Mesta Park and Heritage Hills, are among the first Historic Preservation Districts in the state. With development starting just after the turn of the century, these neighborhoods feature a wealth of local history and intrigue, with the Overholser Mansion (Heritage Hills), one of the finest house museums in the world, and home of the legendary Perle Mesta (Mesta Park) joining the former Georgian "Oil Mansions," Prairie School / Foursquare, and Craftsman-style homes typical of the area.

Jefferson Park
The bungalow neighborhood of Jefferson Park is located two miles north of downtown and a mile west of the State Capitol. Neighbored by some of Oklahoma City’s other historic neighborhoods, Jefferson Park is filled with smaller bungalows that are big on historic charm. 

Historic Capitol Hill
Historic Capitol Hill is located just south of downtown Oklahoma City and was once slated to be the location of the capitol of Oklahoma – thus giving it the source of its name. Years ago, the district was a thriving commercial area and since the creation of Capitol Hill Main Street in 1997, it has experienced a rebirth.

Near Northwest OKC
Situated in the northwest quadrant of Oklahoma City near scenic Lake Hefner, the enduring popularity of these neighborhoods surprises no one. Close to shopping and recreation and sporting easy interstate access, this area is an enclave for those desiring suburban living without the commute. Northwest OKC/Edmond
Recent construction, a growing amount of retail offerings and larger homes are typically what you will find in this area. South OKC/Moore/Norman

Midtown

To see OKC’s renaissance in action, you don’t have to look any farther than the Midtown Distric, centered around Walker Avenue and 10th Street, near St. Anthony Hospital, the city’s first hospital. Midtown connects the energy of downtown with beautiful, historic neighborhoods to its north.

The bustling area continues to develop for people who want to live, work and play in the heart of Oklahoma City, and features housing, retail, night life, hotels and history, with many of its original buildings being brought back to life. The heart of the district is Plaza Court, an 84-year old building that features some of OKC’s favorite restaurants and bars.

Public and private investments have created a thriving district of diversity within its 387 acres. Midtown included the city’s first grocery store, kindergarten and the surviving territorial Victorian homes. Midtown continues to be an urban center in its current-day renaissance as it is one of the hubs of downtown living with a plethora of urban housing recently opened, under construction or announced.

Moving to a new city can be stressful. What part of town should I live in? Should I get a house, condo or apartment? Rent or buy? Sometime you may even be looking for a job. While we here at The Better Life, we spend most of our time trying to keep you informed on great things to do in Oklahoma City. We also want to give you some practical info to help relieve any of the stress we can.

The utilities page on our website is a great starting point if you have any questions on who provides what in Oklahoma City. In Oklahoma City proper OGE Energy is our electric provider and Oklahoma Natural Gas provides, you guessed it, gas. The City of Oklahoma City takes care of water, waste and recycling. Like most major metros we have a plethora of television, phone and internet providers to choose from.

Living outside of the city? No problem we also have links to the surrounding communities where you can get more information on the utilities in your town.

Deep Deuce

Located in the heart of downtown, the Deep Deuce District is one of the most historically significant areas of Oklahoma City and now a key urban center for the metro.

First the history, as the Deep Deuce was the home for African-American culture in Oklahoma City for decades. The district was a regional hub for jazz music in the 40s and home to legends like Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Charlie Christian and Jimmy Rushing. Oklahoma City native and literary giant Ralph Ellison even wrote a tribute to the district in his poem entitled “Deep Second”.

Recently the district has seen remarkable investment and redevelopment. Today you can find great restaurants and much of the city’s urban housing developments, making it the center for urban living in OKC.

A Better Life OKC is more than just an awesome blog about how cool Oklahoma City is; it is also a great and easy-to-use relocation site. The website goes into more depth for people who are moving (or at least thinking of moving) here. If you are curious about OKC there is a good chance the Better Life has the info you are looking for.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

With entertainment, arts, sporting events and nightlife all in your backyard, it is no surprise that downtown Oklahoma City living is booming. With housing options as diverse as the individuals that live in them, downtown Oklahoma City dwelling will give you the urban adventure that you’ve always wanted.

In downtown Oklahoma City, there are a total of 2,880 housing units, with nearly 2,000 more under construction or announced. Most of the construction is rental, but there are a few ownership units under construction as well.  (Rental prices will range anywhere from $784-$3,000, while for-sale options start at around $180,000 for a one-bedroom condo.) For those with children, living in downtown Oklahoma City allows you to have first dibs on entrance to John Rex Charter Elementary School, a tuition-free elementary school that currently offers pre-K through third grade instruction.  By the fall of 2018, the school will offer pre-K through sixth grade.

Living in the Past

Heritage Hills House

You already know that Oklahoma City has plenty of character, and that is especially evident in the historic neighborhoods throughout the city. Tree-lined streets, peaceful front-porches and beautiful architecture all abound within close proximity to downtown and to several of Oklahoma City’s most popular districts.

Crown Heights
Crown Heights is an attractive Historic Preservation District consisting of homes dating from the 30s. Its mix of Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, Mission-Spanish, Monterey, French Eclectic, Minimal Traditional and Art Deco styles combine with characteristic landscaping and a trendy location (bordering Western Avenue shopping and dining, near Asian District , midtown, downtown) to create one of Oklahoma City's premier historic neighborhoods.

Mesta Park/Heritage Hills
Home to many of Oklahoma City's founding elite, the neighborhoods just north of downtown, Mesta Park and Heritage Hills, are among the first Historic Preservation Districts in the state. With development starting just after the turn of the century, these neighborhoods feature a wealth of local history and intrigue, with the Overholser Mansion (Heritage Hills), one of the finest house museums in the world, and home of the legendary Perle Mesta (Mesta Park) joining the former Georgian "Oil Mansions," Prairie School / Foursquare, and Craftsman-style homes typical of the area.

Jefferson Park
The bungalow neighborhood of Jefferson Park is located two miles north of downtown and a mile west of the State Capitol. Neighbored by some of Oklahoma City’s other historic neighborhoods, Jefferson Park is filled with smaller bungalows that are big on historic charm.

Historic Capitol Hill
Historic Capitol Hill is located just south of downtown Oklahoma City and was once slated to be the location of the capitol of Oklahoma – thus giving it the source of its name. Years ago, the district was a thriving commercial area and since the creation of Capitol Hill Main Street in 1997, it has experienced a rebirth.

Near Northwest OKC
Situated in the northwest quadrant of Oklahoma City near scenic Lake Hefner, the enduring popularity of these neighborhoods surprises no one. A variety of residences can be found, ranging from 30s-platted mansions to 50s-built ranch-style to 70s-developed subdivisions with larger footage. Close to shopping and recreation and sporting easy interstate access, this area is an enclave for those desiring suburban living without the commute. Northwest OKC/Edmond
