2019 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championships

Big 12 Baseball

With the warmer, springtime weather now enveloping the 4-0-5, it’s only natural that we spend more time outdoors, soaking in that vitamin D and experiencing some of the awesome sights and sounds that are OKC.

Springtime often brings baseball championships to the metro, and this year is no exception. The Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship will be held at Chickasaw Bricktown Ball Park May 22-26 and there are a variety of ticket packages available.

It should be a great tournament this year as the Big 12 is currently ranked as the second strongest conference in the country with three teams ranked in the top 25.

This year the home state Cowboys enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed while the Sooners will be the No. 7 seed. Both Oklahoma State and Oklahoma have won the tournament twice since 1997. Texas has the most tournament wins with five.

Oklahoma City has hosted the championship every year since 1997, with the exception of 2002, 2004 and 2015. For more info and a link to online tickets click here.

2019 NCAA Womenís College World Series

Women\'s College World Series

A week after the Big 12 Baseball Championships, May 30- June 5, sees the return of the NCAA Women’s College World Series to USA Hall of Fame Stadium. Teams, staff and fans from across the country visit OKC to support their squads during this amazing event. Whether you attend the tournament or not, you might want to visit the free Fan Fest, where a variety of activities are planned, including USA Softball autograph sessions, bat testing demos, inflatable attractions and more. For more info, including details about the eighth annual “StrikeOut Cancer Night” honoring cancer survivors on Monday June 4.

This year’s tournament could have a local feel as both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have advanced to Super Regional play. The Sooners have been the top-ranked team all year and have won two out of the last three National Championships. The Cowgirls are in the mist of their best season in years and are ranked No. 13 nationally. Click here for info and online ticket sales.

Get adventurous

Adventure District

If there is one thing you can say about the Adventure District, it is that it lives up to its name and then some.

The Oklahoma City Zoo is one of the crown jewels of the city and features more than 1,800 animals spread over 119 acres. We recommend the Great escAPE (get it) exhibit where you can watch gorillas, orangutans and chimpanzees monkey around.

Next door to the Zoo is Science Museum Oklahoma which has been entertaining and teaching generations of kids about science since the late 50s. The museum is home to a must-see Science Live performance and a planetarium.

Nearby is the world-renowned National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum where you can find exhibits on cowboy heritage and one of the largest collections of western art in the known galaxy.

There is also fun to be had for sports fans at the ASA National Softball Hall of Fame & Museum. Not just a place for history, the Museum welcomes thousands each year for the annual Women’s College World Series.

Last, but not least, if you need a break from the kids head over to Remington Park Racing & Casino which is not only the region’s top race track, but the city’s only casino.
You can read more about the Adventure district here.

The importance of retail

ICSC tradeshow

Whether you consider yourself a shopping aficionado or not, there is no question that the retail offerings of a community have an impact on its quality of life. More retail means more options and – most importantly to any city in Oklahoma – more sales tax revenue to fund the city’s core services and day-to-day operations.

That’s right, shopping in Oklahoma City helps fund important stuff like police and fire, fixing streets, building sidewalks, beautifying parks, etc. While property taxes can be used to fund voter-approved bond issues for specific capital projects, Oklahoma law actually prohibits cities from levying property taxes for services. That means the more you shop in OKC, the more you help your community!

For that reason, the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber works throughout the year to recruit national, recognizable retailers to our market. One important method of doing that is by attending the International Council of Shopping Centers RECon conference each year. The Chamber, the City of Oklahoma City and other community partners use ICSC RECon to build relationships with national retailers who are looking at locating in the Oklahoma City market. Learn more about the delegation’s work at ICSC RECon on VeloCityOKC.com.

Retail resources

Shopping in OKC

When you combine our low unemployment rate with a low cost of living, people simply have more buying power. And that makes Oklahoma City a great place for retailers to thrive. Retailers love OKC and we, of course, love the steady stream of new shopping and dining options.

Whether you just like to keep up with the latest retail headlines or you need some handy tools to open up your own shop of restaurant, visit okcretail.com. It is a website dedicated to helping the world know about how easy it is to find retail success in OKC. Scout for locations, pull demographic reports, find out about permitting and even peruse property listings from literally anywhere. You can also hear success stories from others who are proud to have a retail presence in OKC.

OKC: where success is in store

Homeland Grocery

When we say that retail is successful in Oklahoma City, don’t just take it from us! Stores representing all sizes and specialties are speaking up about their Oklahoma City experience (spoiler alert: it’s good). Read on for accounts from Oklahoma City retailers about how their business is thriving.

  • The OKC Outlets - The OKC Outlets shopping center just off I-40 in western Oklahoma City has emerged as the go-to shopping destination for outlet shopping enthusiasts across Oklahoma and beyond.
  • Classen Curve- A shopping trip to Oklahoma City’s Classen Curve can be such an unexpected delight that you will come away with a one-word description of the experience: unique.
  • Homeland- There is a distinctive neighborhood flavor to the newly remodeled Homeland grocery supermarket at NW 18 and Classen Boulevard in Oklahoma City. It might be the “Welcome Friends, Locally Owned – Community Proud” sign that greets you as you enter the store.
  • Stella Nova- The ultimate neighborhood coffee shop for Oklahoma City continues to expand.
  • The Black Scintilla- For Rachael Gruntmeir, owner of The Black Scintilla, shopping is more than a transaction. It is relationship building.
  • Chisholm Creek- Two words perfectly describe the Chisholm Creek mixed use development in far northwest Oklahoma City. Experiential. Placemaking.

Can’t get enough retail and development news? We don’t blame you. Luckily for you, VeloCityOKC.com has an entire section devoted to people breaking ground on new concepts in Oklahoma City. Read the latest announcements.

Brewery bonanza

Anthem Beer

Oklahoma has undergone a recent renaissance of craft breweries finding their niche in OKC. This can be traced to a new wave of favorable legislation allowing breweries to sell their beer directly to customers at the breweries’ location, and an extension of possible sale hours rather than closing at 9 p.m. Coop Ale Works, Anthem Brewing Company, Black Mesa Brewing Company, Elk Valley, Stonecloud Brewing, Prairie Artisan Ales, Angry Scotsman, Vanessa House, (405) and Roughtail each have local taprooms located throughout OKC.

Oklahoma brewers have been working in unison to keep the momentum going in establishing The Brewers Union taproom in west OKC, where you can sample a wide variety of the beers brewed at the facility.

Further options of both widely popular local and national brews in OKC can be experienced at Bricktown Brewery, Belle Isle Restaurant & Brewery, McNellie’s Pub House, Fassler Hall, TapWerks and others.

Former Mayor Mick Cornett to speak at first-ever State of the Health event

Mick Cornett

From major investments into sidewalks and trails to the Mayor putting our city on a diet, few communities have invested in health like Oklahoma City has the past decade. To learn more about where our community has been and where it is going in regards to health, don’t miss the first-ever State of Health Monday, May 13 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cox Convention Center.

Former Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett will bring his expertise on addressing a community’s health. Cornett’s keynote remarks will include an overview of how Oklahoma City’s health outcomes have changed since he challenged residents to lose 1 million pounds in 2011. He will also discuss what he has learned from other communities that are also addressing their biggest health challenges.

In addition to Cornett’s keynote address, the program will include a panel discussion with leaders from the region’s four largest health care organizations. Together on the stage for the first time, Jim Gebhart from Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City, Joe Hodges from SSM Health Oklahoma, Timothy Pehrson from INTEGRIS Health and Chuck Spicer from OU Medicine will discuss the landscape of health care in Oklahoma City. Reserve your spot.
