Get to know the Paseo

Paseo First Friday

We’re pretty fond of art here in OKC, and nowhere is that more apparent than the Paseo Arts District. For the less initiated, it’s a district loaded with local artists, galleries, food and more. Locals know that there’s never a wrong time to visit Paseo, but the best times are First Fridays and their annual Arts Festival. Like the name implies, First Fridays happen on the first Friday of every month throughout the year. It’s an especially lively time to see galleries and sample some of the great food in the district! And the festival is when everything comes together—the galleries, local musicians, performers, artisans of all kinds—and delivers the ultimate summer experience.

Go green

O\'City

Get your favorite green clothes out and get ready—St. Patrick’s Day is this Sunday. Like all other holidays, OKC is ready to celebrate the day in style. As always, the O’City Parade will be making its way through the downtown area and Bricktown is hosting a block party. If you’re looking for something new this year, consider how the street car can be your ticket to the ultimate OKC taproom crawl. Don’t get pinched!

Arts central

Art Gallery

The arts scene in Oklahoma City is healthy, flourishing and full of surprises. You can’t go wrong with the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, which houses several great pieces of work in its permanent collection (perhaps most well-known among them being a dazzling collection of Dale Chihuly glass works) as well as countless traveling exhibitions that have attracted visitors from states away. The Paseo District is home to countless local artists and their galleries—in fact, there’s a yearly Arts Festival at Paseo that’s happening at the end of May. The art on display at the 21c Museum Hotel is popular, too. The most recent addition to OKC’s booming arts scene is Factory Obscura, a “contemporary arts juggernaut” that specializes in art experiences like its newest one, Mix Tape. And between visits to these, locals can see countless murals sprinkled generously throughout the metro. We hope you like art as much as we do!

Oklahoma Cityís presidential piece of colonial history

George Washington painting

Ever wondered why President’s Day always happens when it does? It’s because it’s meant to fall around the birthday of our country’s first President, George Washington. Oklahoma City may be known for many things, but because we’re the 46th state, an abundance of colonial history isn’t one of them. Yet despite this, in the heart of the downtown area, on the third floor of the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, visitors can find themselves face-to-face with Washington from a time before his Presidency.

Hike, bike, scout about, fish for trout and camp like a champ: explore Oklahomaís nearby state parks

Roman Nose State Park

Despite some of the cold stuff coming down out of the sky lately, it is March and that means spring is indeed on its way—and thus that also means it’s time to get outside and enjoy some nature. Some great places to explore the local flora and fauna (well, mostly flora, which is probably best, let’s be honest), perhaps even on an overnight basis, are Oklahoma’s state parks. We here at The Better Life HQ have been exploring some of the nearby locations just so we can report to you, dear reader, a few ways to best enjoy some of these spots.

  • Roman Nose State Park (near Watonga, OK; approximately 1.25 hours / 75 miles from downtown OKC) – This beautiful lakeside park offers great hiking and mountain biking trail, resulting in memorable views atop the gypsum cliffs at aptly named Inspiration Point. You can also enjoy an 18-hole golf course, a swimming pool and even hayrides (in season) in addition to fishing, canoeing and paddleboating (both of the latter available to rent). Just north of the state park proper lies Lake Watonga, which is a great place for trout fishing as well as bass, catfish and more. As Roman Nose is just far enough away from the metro to “get away from it all” including a lot of OKC’s light pollution, TBLers have enjoyed some starry-eyed stargazing in addition to mountain biking and the views from Inspiration Point, and even a little fishing.
  • Lake Thunderbird State Park (near Norman; approximately 30 minutes / 27 miles from downtown OKC) – Lake T-Bird is large and in charge of two marinas, two swim beaches, more than 200 RV sites, playgrounds, an archery range and a wide variety of hiking (and even equestrian!) trails of various lengths, in addition to a relatively large number of scenic lakeside primitive camping spots. TBLers especially enjoyed the views of a morning fog lifting off the lake as a prelude to a great day hike in the Clear Bay area.
  • Greenleaf State Park (near Braggs, OK; approximately 2.5 hours / 150 miles from downtown OKC) – This is a popular park for a few reasons. First, it’s generally regarded as very scenic and appears on a variety of “best camping parks in Oklahoma”-type lists around the internet. Second, the original WPA-constructed facilities are still in use and have been well maintained, adding to the atmosphere. Third, this is a popular park for families, as the facility boasts playgrounds, basketball and volleyball courts, a swim area, a discovery center, miniature golf, and even a kid’s pond where 16-and-unders can fish without a permit! Permit yourselves to enjoy Greenleaf State Park, especially if you’ve got little campers in tow (though as the park is quite popular, Greenleaf may not be the best place to “get away from it all” and enjoy the quiet side of nature, as TBLers can attest).
  • BONUS: Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park (near Hinton, OK; approximately 1 hour / 56 miles from downtown OKC) – This former state park is now privately operated, which is good news because it means you can still enjoy the unique red sandstone cliffs and canyons, which are favorites for rappellers and climbers. Other standout features of the park are original wagon-wheel ruts left by settlers on their way west in the mid-19th century, as well as great hiking trails, a swimming pool and playground, and a fishing pond. TBLers really appreciated the luxurious swimming facilities after a rather warm hiking adventure in mid-July, as well as being able to camp in the shadow of the cliffs and trees, offering great shade!

Itís no hyperbole, in fact we agree: you should go see the OKC Energy FC

OKC Energy FC

In 2014 at Pribil Stadium, play began
11 on a side, all wearing green (well, except the goalie, but you know what we mean)
USL and perhaps beyond was the plan
And fans everywhere were seen.

From McGuinness to Taft in 2015,
Balls were kicked and goals scored
Playoffs that season were no dream,
Nor in ’16 and ’17, as championship hopes soared.

2018’s success built slowly, but no one was bored
In fact, the season ended quite well.
Out of the playoffs despite movement toward,
And now the stage is set to give the foes of 2019 hell.

And so, as in any given spring, hopes will swell
And bearded Laurendi returns to guard the net
The roster is full of players that aim to propel
OKC’s pro soccer club to victory, so go get a ticket.

Big 12 Womenís Basketball Championships coming to OKC

NCAA Basketball

It’s tournament time in OKC! Get your March Madness started early by attending the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Tournament, March 8 to 11 at Chesapeake Energy Arena. This is the last year OKC will hold the tournament after serving as host since 2016, as the show will move to Kansas City in 2020 for at least the next five seasons. Let’s send the ladies out with a bang, OKC!

Tickets start at just $12 for a single game, and the #Big12WBB tournament promises four days of great hoops action. The league has been pretty competitive this season, and even though Baylor hasn’t yet lost in conference play, anything can happen come tournament time (just ask Stanford in 1998 or Tennessee in 2009, for example). The tourney should be a great time for fans of every stripe as we look forward to extending OKC’s famed hospitality to visiting fans from all across the league. Check out the bracket and schedule and make plans to attend!
