This week we say goodbye to 2014 and usher in 2015. If you want to celebrate the New Year in style, the place to be in OKC is Opening Night. If you are new to our great city, you might be asking yourself what, exactly, is Opening Night? Well, it is an epic New Year’s Eve celebration all around downtown. Great music (of all kinds of genres), food, drinks, fireworks and even improv comedy performances – Opening Night has a little something for everyone.

Put on by the Arts Council of Oklahoma City, Opening Night is OKC’s premier New Year’s Eve party. Wristbands are just $8 in advance and you can pick them up at 7-Eleven Stores of Oklahoma, metro Homeland stores, Science Museum Oklahoma and MidFirst Bank locations. You can also get wristbands for $10 at the event. Children under 5 are absolutely free.

What are you waiting for? Go get a wristband and then check out the schedule and map online because what better way to say “hasta la vista” to 2014 than with thousands of your new best friends?

Looking to stay a little more active in 2015? Why not get a jump start on your New Year’s resolution by participating in the 2nd annual Opening Night Finale 5K? Before putting on your dancing shoes on New Year’s Eve get one last run in for a good cause.

Presented by INTEGRIS the run starts at 4 p.m., just east of Bicentennial Park downtown (where the Opening Night Finale takes place). This isn’t your normal race, though as there is also a costume contest and the prizes are original works of art. The best part? Every participant gets an Opening Night wristband. That is what we call a win-win.

It is time to say goodbye to 2014 and what a year it has been for OKC. Oklahoma City celebrated its 125th birthday, the Thunder had another great season, pro soccer came to OKC, GE announced a huge project in our town and much, much more.   

This time of the year is filled with “Best of Lists.” Best of music, best of movies, best of television … you get the idea. So why not us? So here are our favorite posts of the past year. Below is a good example of what this blog is all about so you can easily share with your friends and show them why this blog is such a good and entertaining resource. Consider it a “Here-are-five-important-things-a-newbie-to-OKC-needs-to-know” list:

We love to show off our city to out-of-town guests and there’s no better time than the holidays. Once you finish your holiday feast, head out to explore some of the exciting activities in the city.

• Treat the whole family to an unforgettable experience at the Myriad Botanical Gardens & Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory.  We love the tranquil setting and the out-of-this-world playground area, but our favorite activity during the holidays has to be the ice-skating rink. Hours for the ice rink have been extended throughout the holiday season.     
• Science Museum Oklahoma, one of our favorite destinations for family fun, houses so many hands-on science experiments that we have a hard time choosing where to start. From the Tinkering Garage and Gadget Trees to daily shows in the planetarium and dome theater, the museum allows your inner child to run wild.
• We love to share the history of our great state, and the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is the perfect locale to take an inside peek at the spirit, passion and grit symbolized by the American West. There are exhibits for the tikes, too, including the Chuckwagon and Prosperity Junction.
• Come on, the wild is calling! Did you know the Oklahoma City Zoo & Botanical Gardens ranks among the top three family-friendly zoos in the nation? If you haven’t visited in a while, check it out. 2014 has been an exciting year as the zoo celebrated 110 years. 2015 is sure to be just as exciting as with the expected arrival of a baby elephant before the end of the year.
• The 45th Infantry Division Museum, the nation’s largest state-operated military history museum, offers an inside glance at Oklahoma’s military history. Stroll through Thunderbird Park to see more than 60 types of equipment, including tanks, artillery, personnel carriers and aircraft.
• Boot-scoot over to Oklahoma City’s Historic Stockyards City, one of the largest livestock markets in the world, to immerse yourself in authentic cowboy culture. This unique district offers a glimpse into Oklahoma’s cowboy scene. Satisfy your hunger at Cattlemen’s Steakhouse, then head over to catch a live show at the Centennial Rodeo Opry.
• Enter the Oklahoma History Center and let the fascinating lives of Oklahoma oil barons, pioneers, American Indians and Oklahoma’s famous citizens bring the past to life. From the mighty Land Run to nostalgic Route 66 lore and from the stirring Civil War to high-flying airplanes, there’s something for everyone at the Oklahoma History Center.
• OKC 125: A Photography Exhibition provides an interesting perspective on downtown Oklahoma City. The exhibit features works by 125 individuals who captured their favorite downtown sites in 125 minutes.

For sports enthusiasts, Oklahoma City has plenty to offer this holiday season. The Oklahoma City Thunder plays at the Chesapeake Energy Arena tonight, Friday night and New Year’s Eve. The OKC Blue also takes the court on Friday at the Cox Convention Center. Don’t miss Family Fun Day as the OKC Barons take the ice to face the Charlotte Checkers on Sunday, Dec. 28. We can’t resist soft drinks and hot dogs and the opportunity to skate with the players following the game.

If you are a regular reader of this blog (if you aren’t you should be) then you know 2014 was a pretty big year for OKC.  2014 marked the 125th anniversary of our great city’s founding. Yes the town born in a single day (true story) celebrated its Quasquicentennial. Oh, and what a 125 years it has been. From land runs and rugged wildcatters looking for oil to the Oklahoma City Thunder and construction of the 50-story Devon Tower, our fair city has seen some things. While the city continues to evolve in dynamic new ways, one thing stays the same: the people. The original settlers of the city claimed their lands on April 22, 1889, and did so with an independent and entrepreneurial streak that lives on in the citizens to this day. With the land run, Oklahoma City has a history and a founding that is truly unlike any other city. People from around the country gathered on one day to take a chance, start a new life and work together to build a city from scratch. That wildcatter spirit and sense of teamwork is still at the heart of OKC 125 years later.

So as 2014 draws to a close, we wanted one last chance to look at some of our favorite history posts from the past year. These posts help tell the story of our city but there are many chapters yet to be written. You can also access the history posts on your own here.

The Dodger Dog is headed to the big O-K-C. What are we talking about? If you’ve been living under a rock the AAA baseball team in Oklahoma City (formally the Redhawks) is now an affiliate of the historic Los Angeles Dodgers and will now be called the Oklahoma City Dodgers.

The Dodgers are one of the most recognizable brands in all of sports. The franchise has won six World Series titles as well as 21 National League (NL) pennants.

The uniform and logo also have made the Dodgers unmistakable across the world. The Boys in Blue, as they are called, have had virtually the same uniforms for going on 70 years now. The best part is, they have incorporated the logo and color scheme into the new uniforms for Oklahoma City, and we think they look pretty swell. The merchandise is available now in the team store and makes a great holiday gift. We here at Better Life HQ might have already picked up a hat or two (maybe three).

OKC’s malls are certainly popular shopping destinations for many, especially during Christmastime, and for good reason. But if the food court freaks you out, the kiosks are confusing and parking lots induce panic, check out some of the pop-up retail locations around downtown and shop where no one has shopped before! Except for, well, the last couple years or so… Anyway, the Holiday Pop-Up Shops at Midtown feature a rotating mix of retailers every Thursday through Sunday until December 21st. Learn more at their website. Likewise, the Winter Shoppes at the Myriad Gardens are open Thursdays through Sundays, as well as Monday the 21st and Tuesday the 22nd. Check out their retailers and more deets at their website. Shop local boutique-style, and enjoy some of the downtown OKC holiday festivities while you’re at it.

We compiled a list of places to look at Christmas lights and décor so you can check out the competition and see how big you need to go next year. Gotta check every bulb, Rusty.

• Devon Energy Center’s Bill Brasky-sized ornaments have again taken their places on the lawn and outside the Colcord, as well as in the rotunda. Get a little taste of what it would be like to be an ant or the victim of a Rick Moranis experiment while taking in the holiday decor.
• OneMain Financial’s Bricktown Canal Lights plus free water taxi rides equal the best of ways to make nighttime the brighttime.
• The SandRidge Bricktown Christmas Tree is up and blazin’ at the 3rd Base Plaza at the ballpark until January 1.
• The Automobile Alley Lights on Broadway are located between 4th and 10th streets. Auto Alley does not mess around with its 180,000 lights along eight blocks.
• The Chesapeake Energy Holiday Lights Display on Western Ave around 63rd fire up 61,000 strands and 4.3 million LEDs!  
• Headed east? Then hit up Midwest City’s Holiday Lights Spectacular at Joe B. Barnes park.
• Headed west? Then hit up Yukon’s Christmas in the Park in what is actually three interconnected parks.

Ahh, Christmastime. Snow, lights, Santa, candy canes, carols, and fudge. Mmm, fudge... Sorry. We just really like fudge. Anyway, for you parents out there, all this merriment can mean maybe just a little too much time with your little snow angels now that they’re out of school for a while. But before you go taking numerous nips from the nog in an attempt to deal, check out some of the winter break options to keep those kiddos from being cooped up in the house too much over the holidays.

• Thunder Youth Basketball Camp – fundamentals and fun for all skill levels. December 29 & 30, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., ages 5-16. An alternative to playing ball in the house!
• Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center – camps include instruction in different mediums / skills depending on age (5-8 or 9-12). December 18-19 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Let ‘em create art here instead of their bedroom walls.
• OKC Zoo Safari Day Camps – ages 4-12 can hit the zoo December 30, 31 and January 19. Kids will connect with animals and nature instead of your last nerve. Advance registration and payment required.
• Holiday Magic Drama Camp at NW Optimist Park – campers sing, dance and learn some classic holiday numbers culminating in a family performance. December 22-23 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 405-297-1437 for more info ($50 per camper). Now they can be dramatic about something other than that present they won’t shut up about.
• Soccer City Winter Break Camp – let your kids get their kicks by taking out their frustrations on a soccer ball instead of the furniture and/or their siblings. Ages 4-15 are welcome and will be divided among age, ability and flopping potential (kidding!). December 22-24 and 29-31.
• Santa’s Adventures at RIVERSPORT – not really a camp per se, but the Rudolph Launch, Candy Cane Rock Wall, Snow Bounce and more are open for riverside fun from 1 – 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays through January 4th. Note that this includes the SandRidge Santa Zip, where you drop a wrapped package into a chimney target as you fly down the zip line. Picture that for a second, and just try to tell us it doesn’t sound AWESOME.

As of this writing, the red-hot OKC Barons are sitting on top of the West division standings. And you have two, count ‘em two, chances this weekend to see your team on the Cox Center ice against those pesky Griffins (well, not really griffins, but hockey players wearing a picture of a griffin on their jersey) of Grand Rapids. It’s hockey time in OKC on Friday and Saturday (December 12 and 13) at 7:00 p.m. They may have rapids that are grand, but we’ve got Hamilton, Williams and Derrick the Mountain Lion (well, not really a mountain lion, but a guy wearing a mountain lion furry. As the holiday season kicks off, we’ve given thanks for our blessings and shopped the best deals on Black Friday in person and Cyber Monday online. Now it’s time to give something back.

In recent years, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has become known as Giving Tuesday, or #GivingTuesday as it’s tagged on social media sites. It is a reminder that there are lots of organizations that need our help, especially during the holidays. It’s a global movement that we and our families can join at the local level and start a new holiday tradition of generosity.

And so, in honor of #GivingTuesday today, Tuesday, Dec. 2, let’s talk about some of our local nonprofit organizations.

If you don’t know where to start, click here to find all the Chamber members that are nonprofits.

But we’ll give you some ideas here:

• Adopt-a-Family during the holidays from Upward Transitions to provide them with specific needs. Upward Transitions operates two programs – Travelers Aid and the Homeless Assistance Center, which is a community outreach program that helps needy and homeless clients by providing basic needs.
• Buy something from the wish list of Infant Crisis Services, Inc., which provides formula, food, diapers and other needs to babies and toddlers in crisis.
• Give a matching gift to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma – Chesapeake Energy Corp. and the Cresap Family Foundation will match all donations to the Food Bank between now and Jan. 15 up to $1 million, a gift that would provide 10 million meals for chronically hungry children. Or, sign up your family to volunteer in its warehouse.
• Donate to Allied Arts, the area’s umbrella organization for central Oklahoma’s cultural groups, and get a chance to win one of 10 prize packages, including a $250 gift certificate.

Oklahoma has more than 17,000 nonprofit groups in the state, so there are many ways you can get involved. Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits is always a great resource for the state’s nonprofit groups.

If you are overwhelmed by the number of causes to which you can contribute your time or money, take a look at all the good that the United Way of Central Oklahoma does in the community.

This organization has formed partnerships with more than 60 organizations that contribute to the area’s health, safety, education or economic well-being of families, according to the United Way’s mission. A donation to the United Way will help fund these valuable programs that are held accountable by the United Way.

The United Way picks its partner organizations according to five identified “Focus Areas”: Strong Families, Successful Kids, Healthy Citizens, Independent Living and Community Preparedness. In 2013, the organization raised more than $22 million to help fund these nonprofit agencies’ programs.

The United Way has been serving the community for more than 90 years, and the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber is proud that it had a role in its creation decades ago.

As we launch into full winter mode here in OKC, there are plenty of people who will need coats and other gear to keep warm. Here are some ways to help:

• The Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) district already has distributed more than 5,000 new coats to children in need through a partnership with the national nonprofit organization Operation Warm. The organization accepts monetary donations, and then OKCPS buys the new coats to distribute to students in need this winter. Although OKCPS is wrapping up the campaign for funds that began this summer, it is still accepting donations to help and still identifying students’ needs. To donate, send a check or money order with the words “OKCPS Coat-A-Kid project” in the memo to Operation Warm, P.O. Box 822431, Philadelphia, PA 19182-2431 or donate online.
• For more than 30 years, those in need have been able to “shop” for Christmas gifts and other supplies and clothing in a department store setting where all the merchandise is free. Although it started out as a seasonal nonprofit organization, The Christmas Connection has developed into a service agency that provides support throughout the year through five programs: Christmas Shopping Days, School Connections, Crisis Relief, Senior Shopping Days and General Shopping for basic needs. It only takes $20 to give a child a winter coat. Donate funds online, or donate items by dropping them off at Christmas Connection, Inc., 5728 S May Ave., or at one of four Quik Print locations, 3403 Northwest Expressway, 7206 N Western Ave., 406 NW 23 or 10633 N May Ave.
•  Infant Crisis Services, Inc., is in need of coats for its littlest clients.
• Give to Brad Edwards’ Warmth 4 Winter coat drive, which goes to the Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command for distribution. Among other locations in central Oklahoma, you can drop off items in Oklahoma City at KFOR-TV NewsChannel 4, 444 E Britton Road; The Salvation Army – Oklahoma City, 1001 N Pennsylvania;  Earlywine Park YMCA, 11801 S May; and The Outlet Shoppes at Oklahoma City, 7624 W Reno Ave. , #380.  Also, participating Jersey Mike’s restaurants are giving away Philly Cheese subs to those bringing in a new coat for donation through Dec. 21.
