Meet and greet

Chamber Forum

So you are new to Oklahoma City and you’ve completed the first step of becoming an official Oklahoma Citian by signing up for our blog, but now what? How do you make new friends in your new hometown? Take our advice and join a local civic group. They are a great way to meet people who love their community while making a local impact.

Of course, our No. 1 recommendation would be to join the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber. Besides paying the bills at the Better Life headquarters they offer a plethora of exciting networking events like SchmoozaPalooza and Chamber Forums. In fact, there is a Chamber Forum tomorrow on the topic of entrepreneurship in OKC. If you want to test the waters before jumping into a membership know that most Chamber events are open to non-chamber members.

Besides the Chamber, other organizations like Lions Club or a local chapter of the Rotary Club are great ways to meet people and get involved.

School spirit

Networking with students

Alumni associations are a great way to make new connections when you move to a city. Obviously, the two major state schools, OU and OSU, boast large alumni groups in Oklahoma City, but a quick google search will find that many universities have an alumni presence in OKC.  Not only do alumni associations offer connections to your classmates, but the opportunity to meet new people and share your knowledge with current students. Get connected with your university to learn about what’s going on and take advantage of the many opportunities they offer.

Get involved in the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber

Vendors at SchmoozaPalooza

We at the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber would love to have you volunteer with us, too, and there are opportunities throughout the year as a Chamber Ambassador that provide you with a chance to network and meet new people in the business community.

We love our volunteers who help us by attending business grand openings, welcoming new members and assisting at events throughout the year. These events include Metro 50, State of the Schools, State of the City, our Annual Meeting, Sunset Receptions and our twice-a-year SchmoozaPalooza, the area’s premier trade show, which gives business professionals a casual and fun networking event with live music, food tastings and a showcase of area businesses. It takes fun-minded volunteers to help us make that happen. For a list of Chamber events visit our site. While we would love to have you as a member most of our events are open to nonmembers.

Find out more about becoming a Chamber Ambassador in order to help with these activities by going online or contacting Amanda Bowen at abowen@okcchamber.com or (405) 297-8961.

This State of Creativity

Creativity has long been a hallmark of the State of Oklahoma. From the bold individuals who staked their claim during the Land Runs to the entrepreneurial spirit that led to the creation of the parking meter, shopping cart and other great inventions that still impact lives today, Oklahoma is certainly a trail blazing state. So it makes sense that Gov. Mary Fallin has declared November 2013 as “State of Creativity Month.” This proclamation coincides with numerous creative events, the largest being Creative Oklahoma’s State of Creativity Forum, taking place across the state in conjunction with Global Entrepreneurship Week, the third week in November.

The State of Creativity Forum is one of the largest creativity and innovation conferences in the U.S. Attendees from across the country will converge on the Civic Center Music Hall in downtown Oklahoma City on Nov. 19th for a day of galvanizing workshops, moving artistic performances, and inspirational talks by some of the globe’s most important creative minds. The theme of this year’s Forum is “Building Bridges.” There are even more offerings on tap for attendees. Read about them here.

Talk to TED

It’s likely you’ve heard about TED and its talks. They’re pretty famous (and awesome). So awesome in fact that they were smart enough to ask our mayor, Mick Cornett, to give one about how the people of OKC are transforming ourselves. Have a listen

Coming up on Dec. 5, you can experience TED for yourself at TEDxOCU Women. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. This independently organized TED event will take place on the OCU campus. The theme of this event is Resiliency and will offer a chance for the women of Oklahoma to come together, share ideas, engage, encourage and change the community. Find out more and get registered.

Brewing Up Some Scientific Fun

Oklahoma City is known for its booming biotech industry and the region’s craft beer prowess is growing. So why not combine the two for a day at the 2nd annual OKBio BrewFest? Since there’s quite a bit of science going into that pint of beer, we think it’s a perfect pairing.  Head over to the Harn Homestead and learn the bioscience of beer from the experts while sampling handcrafted brews and enjoying great music, food and networking. This year’s event will feature 11 local breweries, a local wine shop and a Guthrie distillery. Click here to see a list. The cost to attend is $25. All proceeds benefit the Oklahoma Bioscience Institute.

A little schmoozin’. A little paloozin’.

Whether you are a new resident to OKC or a lifer, SchmoozaPalooza is the must-attend networking party. Never been to SchoozaPalooza? Well you are in for a treat. Part trade show, part networking event and all party, Schmooza (as the locals call it) is a great way to get to know more professionals in the metro area. It’s all about networking while more than 100 exhibitors show off their newest products and services. And when you find yourself needing some sustenance after all that networking, you can sample from dozens of the best restaurants around while winning prizes and listening to live music from Travis Linville. We told you it was a party.

Still not sold for some reason? This Schoomza is a great excuse to break out your Flapper dress or Fedora as we go back in time with a Roaring 20s theme. Dress up and enjoy live jazz music while living it up with your friends. Maybe someone will even break out in the Charleston. So head over to the Travel & Transportation building at State Fair Park on April 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. to schmooze, palooze and party like it is 1929.

Get your network on.

Networking, networking, networking … does it seem like that is all you hear about these days? Well, for good reason. Networking is key to professional development. And it’s a great way to make connections in your new hometown. Whether you are looking for a new job or just want to strengthen your established business relationships, face-to-face interaction cannot be beat. It is critical that young professionals – especially those new to a city – get to know other professionals through networking. So we’ve got a few suggestions for how to get out there and network your heart out.

A great place to start is the Alliance of Emerging Professionals. Open to those either employed or seeking employment between the ages of 20-39, AEP aims to be the hub of activity and networking to enhance life as a business professional. AEP hosts numerous civic, social and professional events throughout the year in OKC.

Other great networking opportunities are always available through professional organizations and trade groups. Organizations like PRSA, IABC, Women in Communications and Young Professionals in Energy are great places to meet like-minded professionals. No matter what field you are in, chances are there is an organization for you. Check with your human resources department for what groups might best fit your area of expertise.

Of course local Chambers are also a great place to network. The Greater Oklahoma City Chamber hosts a monthly networking event called Sunset Reception. Held at different locations each month, Sunset Receptions involve nothing but food, drinks and networking. Best of all, it is 100 percent free.

Oh What a Beautiful Morning

It’s probably not a surprise that a blog about Oklahoma City might on occasion like to throw in a reference to the amazingly wonderful musical, “Oklahoma!” Here in OKC, it is pretty much always a beautiful morning. But now it’s time to get back on track . . .

How about networking and making Oklahoma City beautiful? That is exactly what the Making Oklahoma City Beautiful Young Professional Organization is all about. The “MOB” gives young professionals the opportunity to network through service. Through projects designed to help make OKC beautiful (or at least prettier than it already is), the organization helps it members network while developing pride and ownership in the metro area. Making your city as beautiful as possible while making new business connections? Sounds like a definite win-win to us!

We Mean Business

The Greater Oklahoma City Chamber is all about getting down to business – literally. Representing more than 5,000 businesses in the 10-county region that includes Oklahoma City and its surrounding area, the Chamber works to attract new businesses and high-paying jobs, strengthen economic development, promote retail development, offer education and workforce initiatives and advance the interests of its members and the business community. On top of all that, it also finds time to produce a terrific blog highlighting the best of Oklahoma City (the one you're reading now, coincidentally). Whew!
