Soccer: Oklahoma’s Other Fútbol

Whether you’re a fan of football or, well, fútbol, OKC has a place and a team for you. The OKC Energy is the city’s professional soccer team and is part of the United Soccer League, the largest professional soccer league in the world with 29 teams. Around for only three years, the OKC Energy has already had a tremendous impact on the Oklahoma City sports scene and community through camps, youth club partnerships and more.

OKC Energy soccer is a great way to spend time with family and friends as you cheer on a team that is growing in popularity. So popular, in fact, that a new soccer stadium may be in the works that will move the Energy up to Major League Soccer.

You can take a look at the Energy’s soccer schedule on their website here. And when you go, don’t forget to practice yelling goal like this guy to get you in the soccer spirit.

Energy FC kickoff

Energy FC Fans

Labor Omnia Vincit, or Labor Conquers All, is the motto central to the identity of the OKC Energy FC. The motto is a reflection of the hard working spirit of Oklahomans, and their flag contains elements of our own.

The OKC Energy, who had their inaugural season in 2014, play in the United Soccer League. The league features 29 teams in the United States and Canada. During their short history, the OKC Energy FC has already had a tremendous impact on the Oklahoma City sports scene and local community through camps, youth club partnerships and more.

OKC Energy soccer is a great way to spend time with family and friends as you cheer on a team that made it to the Western Conference Semifinals in 2016. Cheer on the OKC Energy FC in their home opener Saturday, April 8 at Taft Stadium against the Rio Grande Valley Toros FC. Be sure to check out their full schedule on their website.

Looking back, forging ahead

OKC Energy Fans [Photo Credit: OKC Energy]

2015 was an exciting year in Oklahoma City. We committed to the Oklahoma Standard, celebrated the inaugural season of the OKC Dodgers, welcomed two new elephants at the OKC Zoo, got fired up for OKCFest, went rolling on the river as we hosted national and international contestants during the Oklahoma Regatta Festival, cheered as the Energy made their first playoff run, shopped till we dropped at all the new retailers across the city and were inspired by the creation of Innovation District.

But if you thought 2015 was thrilling in OKC, buckle your seat belts and hold on tight because we are just getting started. With the completion of some MAPS 3 projects including improvements at State Fair Park and the world-class RIVERSPORT Rapids, 2016 promises to be an exhilarating year.

And our resolution for 2016: keeping you – our loyal reader – in the know about all of the cool, hip happenings in OKC. Don’t hesitate to hit us up on Facebook or Twitter with questions or ideas. All our posts are also tagged by topic so you can easily find past blogs for information, everything from attractions to downtown and much more.

What are we thankful for? Sports

OKC Energy Player [Photo Credit: OKC Energy]

Crimson and Cream, Orange and Black, Blue and “Sunset” … no matter what color you pledge alliance to, it has been a year to be thankful for in the Sooner State (or Cowboy Nation). The football teams are making national waves, the Thunder just tipped off an exciting year and our local pro baseball and soccer teams got a taste of deep post-season runs. Check out some recent blog posts if you need a quick refresher on the joy (and sometimes agony) our local teams provide.

  • Oklahoma City Thunder- Injuries derailed an exciting Thunder team last season but a new coach and healthy team (knocking on all the wood in the world) has this looking like a year we won’t soon forget.
  • Oklahoma City Dodgers- The Dodgers wrapped up their inaugural season in OKC with a division title.
  • Oklahoma City Energy- In just two short years OKC’s soccer team has already developed a rabid fan base. The fan base was rewarded with a great season as the Energy advanced to the Western Conference finals.
  • Oklahoma City Blue- The Blue are starting their second season in Oklahoma City and the games are a great place to get a preview of future NBA talent.
  • Oklahoma Sooners- The Sooners have one of the most storied football programs in the country and are looking to add to their impressive trophy case this season. The basketball team is also nationally ranked to start the season.
  • Oklahoma State Cowboys- The Cowboys are in the winningest era in the program’s history. OSU will play OU this weekend with a potential conference championship on the line.
  • Small-College Football- The Sooners and Cowboys are not the only local colleges who play big-time football.

Use your energy to cheer the Energy’s playoff run

OKC Energy Player [Photo Credit: OKC Energy]

Led by head coach Jimmy Nielsen (AKA The White Puma), the Energy have had the best regular season campaign in their short history, and now look toward the 2015 USL playoffs! The Energy will end the season in 2nd place in the Western Conference. So yeah, it’s playoff time in OKC! The Energy charged themselves into a first-round playoff bye, and will host a second-round match at Taft Stadium on Sunday, October 4 at 6:00 p.m. against the winner of one of the first-round matchups (#3 seed vs. #6 seed). Final seeds will be determined tonight with the conclusion of the Sacramento vs. Orange County match.

If you haven’t seen a match in person yet, it’s definitely going a great time to break the seal on that deal and experience the ball-kicking Energy action yourself. More info can be found at www.energyfc.com. Get out to historic Taft Stadium and support your Energy!
