Oklahoma City will add a new professional sports franchise in 2028, as the United Football League announced plans to place an expansion team in the city.
The team will begin play in spring 2028 and serve as a primary tenant of the MAPS 4 multipurpose stadium, which is currently under construction in downtown Oklahoma City and expected to open that same year.
The announcement marks a significant milestone for the MAPS 4 investment, confirming a major tenant for the venue before it opens and reinforcing its role as a year-round destination for sports, events and entertainment.
Mayor David Holt said the announcement reflects the kind of opportunity city leaders envisioned for the MAPS 4 multipurpose stadium. “We have always said that the MAPS 4 Multipurpose Stadium opens up new opportunities for our city, and this is a perfect example,” Holt said.
The multipurpose stadium is designed as a flexible, mid-sized venue capable of hosting a wide range of events, including professional and amateur sports, concerts and community gatherings. With the addition of a UFL franchise, the facility will now feature a consistent seasonal schedule anchored by spring football.
The expansion is part of the UFL’s broader growth strategy, which will bring the league to 10 teams by 2028. The league currently includes teams in major markets such as Arlington, Houston, St. Louis, Washington, D.C., and Birmingham, placing Oklahoma City among a growing lineup of nationally recognized sports cities.
The new team will join a rapidly expanding sports landscape in Oklahoma City, which includes the Oklahoma City Thunder, a new downtown arena currently under development and multiple events tied to the 2028 Olympic Games.
Together, these investments signal a broader strategy to position Oklahoma City as a premier destination for sports and entertainment, while creating new opportunities to attract visitors, support local businesses, and enhance quality of life for residents.
