Three Unique Neighborhoods with Historic Ties
Oklahoma City’s neighborhoods each have a story to tell. Some were once country clubs, others grew up alongside the city itself, and all of them still carry their history in their streets and homes. Here are three districts where history meets modern OKC living.
Crown Heights began its life as the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club before developer G.A. Nichols purchased the land and divided it into housing lots. By the 1930s, it was one of the city’s most desirable neighborhoods, even earning the nickname “Pill Hill” because of the number of physicians who lived there. Today, Crown Heights is a Historic Preservation District known for its architectural variety, including Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, Mission-Spanish, Monterey, French Eclectic, Minimal Traditional and even touches of Art Deco. Add in its landscaped medians and proximity to Western Avenue dining, the Asian District, Midtown and downtown, and it is easy to see why Crown Heights remains a premier historic neighborhood.
Founded in 1902 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Mesta Park is a thriving neighborhood just north of downtown. Many of the homes here are Prairie, Foursquare and Craftsman style, giving the area a warm and welcoming feel. The neighborhood is also known for its community events. Each year, the Holiday Home Tour draws visitors to see beautifully decorated historic homes, while Mesta Festa brings neighbors and visitors together for music, food and fun in the park.
Military Park
Military Park combines historic charm with convenience and affordability. Developed between 30th and 36th streets, the neighborhood is filled with small bungalow homes that reflect early 20th-century Oklahoma City. Today, it sits right next to the Asian District and just minutes from downtown. Military Park’s strong sense of community has even earned recognition. Nextdoor ranked it among the top five “Best Connected Neighborhoods” in the city.
Whether you are exploring the eclectic architecture of Crown Heights, enjoying the traditions of Mesta Park or soaking in the community spirit of Military Park, each neighborhood offers a window into Oklahoma City’s past and a lively place to call home today.
