If you’re new to Oklahoma City, you may have noticed something surprising about your new hometown: we don’t just cheer for basketball and football—we also love river sports. Olympic-style racing shells light up the Oklahoma River each fall during the Oklahoma Regatta Festival.
This annual event, taking place from Oct. 3-5, is one of Oklahoma City’s most unique traditions. It brings together rowing, kayaking, and dragon boat racing teams from across the country for a weekend of high-speed action on the water. This event was established way back in 2004.
When the sun goes down, the river comes alive. The banks glow with light as crews race head-to-head in sprints you can cheer on just feet away from the action. It’s a little bit like Friday night lights… but on the water.
The Regatta Festival isn’t just races—it’s a full-on celebration. You’ll find food trucks, live music, kids’ activities, fireworks and plenty of space to hang out by the river. It’s one of those festivals that feels both exciting and laid-back at the same time.
With Oklahoma City hosting the Canoe Slalom competitions for the LA28 Summer Games, this is an excellent opportunity to get a small taste of what Olympians from around the world will experience soon.
Think of the Oklahoma Regatta Festival as a mashup of sports, community, and nightlife—all on the water. It’s a perfect way to experience something you probably didn’t expect when you moved here: Oklahoma City has a legit river sport scene and a community that loves to come together to celebrate it.
