Oklahoma summers aren’t known for being mild; July and August often bring some of the hottest days of the year. And while a little sunshine can be good for the soul, extreme heat can quickly turn dangerous if you’re not prepared. At The Better Life, we’ve put together a few easy tips to help you stay safe, cool and hydrated all summer long.
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Water is your best friend during the summer months. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of it throughout the day—and don’t forget about electrolytes, especially if you’re spending time outside. Beverages like soda, sweet tea and lemonade may taste refreshing, but they can dehydrate you.
- Dress for the weather
Choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothes that allow your body to breathe. Natural fabrics like cotton or linen can help regulate your body temperature better than synthetics.
- Know the forecast
Oklahoma weather can change quickly, and extreme heat alerts are no joke. Keep an eye on local news stations or your favorite weather app for heat advisories, warnings or dangerous index levels—and adjust your plans accordingly.
- Time your outdoor activities wisely
If you need to be outside, try to stick to early mornings or late evenings when temperatures are lower. Take plenty of breaks, stay in the shade when possible and wear sun-protective gear like hats, sunglasses and breathable long sleeves.
- Watch for signs of heat illness
Watch the warning signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which can include muscle cramps, dizziness, nausea, extreme fatigue and heavy sweating. If you or someone around you is experiencing these symptoms, it’s time to cool down immediately and seek medical care if needed.
Summer should be a time for fun, not a trip to the ER. Keep these tips in mind and enjoy everything Oklahoma has to offer while staying safe in the heat!
