The City of Oklahoma City is asking residents not to call 911 to report illegal fireworks so that emergency lines stay clear for life-threatening emergencies.
“Complaints about fireworks overload 911 phone lines and can keep people experiencing an emergency from quickly connecting with a dispatcher,” said Fire Chief Richard A. Kelley.
Residents should call 911 only if fireworks start a fire or hurt someone.
To report illegal fireworks, residents who know the address where fireworks are being used can contact the city in the following ways:
- Call the Fireworks Hotline at 405-297-2222
- Email [email protected]
- Text 405-252-1053
The city will investigate reports.
It is illegal to buy, sell or use fireworks within Oklahoma City limits. This includes sparklers, bottle rockets, snakes and other popular fireworks. The ban applies to public and private property, including parks, lakes and areas along the Oklahoma River.
“Fireworks are a serious safety hazard to people and property and should be left to professional shows,” Kelley said.
Violators face a $500 fine, confiscation of fireworks and possible jail time under the city’s ordinance.
