If you’re new to Oklahoma City or just looking for a great way to explore local culture, the Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum is a must-see. Now in its 53rd year, Prix de West is one of the country’s most respected Western art shows. It brings together artists, collectors, and fans from all over to celebrate the stories, landscapes, and traditions of the American West. While the art sale happened June 20 and 21, the full exhibition is still open through August 3.
Each summer, the museum becomes a gallery packed with nearly 300 pieces from more than 90 artists. The show includes paintings, sculptures, and mixed media that capture everything from wide-open plains and wild horses to portraits of Native Americans and scenes from cowboy life. It’s a chance to see how the spirit of the West is reflected through different creative styles and voices.
For those new to Oklahoma, Prix de West is a great introduction to the history and culture that have helped shape the state. Whether you're drawn to bold, dramatic artwork or quieter, more personal pieces, there's something here that will speak to you.
The opening weekend included a dinner, awards ceremony, and a chance for collectors to buy art through a fixed-price drawing. Guests also got to meet artists and attend talks and demos that gave more insight into the stories behind the work.
Even if you missed the sale, there’s still time to catch the exhibition and experience the beauty and meaning behind these works. Whether you're an art lover, a newcomer curious about your new home, or someone who’s grown up here and wants to reconnect with familiar stories, this show is worth a visit.
