Bar K, well-known for its innovative blend of dog park, bar and restaurant, has earned the title of “Best Dog Bar” in USA TODAY’s 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards. This accolade highlights Bar K’s pioneering role in transforming traditional dog parks into vibrant social hubs that cater to both pets and their owners.
“We will continue to be thought leaders in this exciting new industry segment,” Tim Schoenfelder, CEO of Bar K said. “It is exciting to be recognized for our leadership position as we continue to create creative new opportunities for people and dogs to socialize together.”
Bar K has led the way in revolutionizing the concept of dog bars since opening its first location on the shores of the Missouri River in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, in 2018. Subsequent openings in St. Louis (2021) and Oklahoma City (2023) have further solidified Bar K's role in transforming traditional dog parks from basic, unsupervised public spaces with minimal amenities and safety protocols, Bar K has evolved these into professionally managed, fully staffed destinations designed for the enjoyment and safety of both pets and their human companions.
Bar K's opening in Oklahoma City was a major achievement as the boathouse district's first commercial development, supported by the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber. Tammy Fate, senior retail and recruitment manager at the Chamber, emphasized Bar K’s ability to bring in visitors and enhance community interaction locally.
David Hensley, in a previous interview with VeloCity, reflected on Bar K's expansion and community influence, highlighting how the concept evolved from insights gained at its original Kansas City site and the then newly launched St. Louis location. "Bar K isn't simply a dog park with a bar; it's a destination where dog lovers come for a heightened social experience," Hensley explained during his visit to Oklahoma City for RIVERSPORT’s Dogtober event in 2020.
The Oklahoma City venue features craft beer, cocktails and fast-casual dining options crafted by top culinary and mixology talents. With a large, temperature-controlled indoor play area complementing its expansive outdoor space, Bar K aims to cater to both weekday visitors and weekend enthusiasts, fostering a welcoming environment for all.
"Dogs have a remarkable ability to bring people together, making Bar K a pivotal space for community-building and shared experiences.” added Hensley.
