Science Museum Oklahoma (SMO) is thrilled to unveil its latest exhibit. “Currents: Turning the Tide on Ocean Conservation,” will be on display at SMO’s smART Space gallery from Sept. 2, 2023, to April 2024.
The “Currents” exhibit will feature the works of five renowned artists from all parts of the world. Here, they will illustrate and display pieces and installations that help define the relationship between the ocean and mankind.
The discovery and findings from underwater excursions have altered the perspective of these artists, triggering a new definition of purpose and expansion of their own horizons. These experiences led to various methods and techniques for a highly anticipated, collaborative exhibition.
Turning scraps and trash from the deep waters into art is a heartfelt response that echoes a resounding message of reality and concern.
Alyson Atchison, SMO’s director of smART Space, shared her thoughts on the mission of the exhibit.
“It has been said that today we know more about outer space than the depths and extent of our oceans on Earth,” said Atchison. “It has also been said that by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean. The measurement and exploration of the truth in these statements are where the curiosity and importance of scientists lie in our future. And artists like the five featured in Currents bring tangible optimism and change through creative expression, observation and practice.”
Science Museum Oklahoma is dedicated to intersecting art and science. For admission information and to learn more about the “Currents” exhibit, visit www.sciencemuseumok.org.
