Moments of passage, reckoning and renewal are on display at the Oklahoma Contemporary through paintings, sculptures, photographs and more in the 2023 ArtNow exhibit, “The Soul is a Wanderer.”
Inspired by Joy Harjo’s poem, “A Map to the Next World,” the museum and Tulsa-based curator Lindsay Aveilhé brought together 13 cross-generational artists for the exhibition. Each artist has drawn from the poem to recall the past to unearth complex histories as they journey beyond the present via alternate routes toward futures of their own making.
Sterlin Harjo, co-creator of the hit Indigenous comedy “Reservation Dogs,” is this year’s Focus Awardee for his films that reflect Native life in Oklahoma.
Thirteen artists, including eight from Oklahoma, have work displayed in the exhibition:
- Ruth Borum-Loveland (Oklahoma City)
- Ashanti Chaplin (Tulsa)
- Isaac Diaz (Oklahoma City)
- Yusuf Etudaiye (Okene, Nigeria)
- Yatika Starr Fields (Stillwater.; Osage/Cherokee/Muscogee)
- Sterlin Harjo (Holdenville.; Seminole Nation of Oklahoma/Muscogee descent)
- Molly Kaderka (Austin, Texas)
- Kite (Sylmar, Calif.; Oglala Sioux Tribe)
