July in Oklahoma is when outdoor temperatures are usually at their hottest and our longing for ice cream is at its highest. And what better time to appease your body’s hankering for the frozen treat than in July – National Ice Cream Month!
Did you know that in July 1984, former U.S. President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day? Let’s see… for 2023 that would mean July 16 is National Ice Cream Day! Not a bad way to end the weekend, huh?
If you are looking to satisfy your sweet tooth with some of the tastiest ice cream in OKC, the team at A Better Life will gladly provide you with some suggestions.
Oklahoma City offers a plethora of ice cream shops scattered throughout the city. Of course, being the 20th largest city in the nation, there are lots of excellent choices, including both nationwide chains and locally owned businesses. Let’s check out a just a few:
- Boom Town Creamery — Ice cream is always the answer for this relative newcomer to the OKC market. With three stores around the metro — 605 NW 23rd St., 10740 S. May Ave. and 17 E. 15th St. in Edmond — Boom Town Creamery’s ice cream is all handmade in small batches from scratch and in a variety of flavors, including Chocolate Tornado, Bananas Foster, Peanut Butter Cookie, Lemon Berry Bliss and Key Lime Pie.
- Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy Stores — Braum’s opened their first store in OKC in 1968 and has since expanded into four neighboring states with more than 300 stores. There are currently 58 Braum’s stores throughout the metro area. There are more than 100 Braum’s old-fashioned, premium ice cream selections that vary by location.
- Capitals Ice Cream — Located in OKC’s Midtown District at 1006 N. Hudson Ave., Capitals Ice Cream offers a variety of ice cream combinations, some sporting names with which any Oklahoman would be familiar, names such as coOKIEs & Cream, Mount Scott, Great Salt Plains and the Oklahoma Standard.
- Kaiser’s Grateful Bean Café — This blast from the past touts itself as OKC’s only authentic old-fashioned soda fountain and café. Located at 1039 N. Walker in the Midtown District, Kaiser’s has been serving up homemade ice cream and great sandwiches since 1917. If you are a fan of nostalgia and prefer an ambiance of an era gone by, then Kaiser’s is the place for you!
- Roxy’s Ice Cream Social — Roxy’s Ice Cream Social has been serving Philadelphia-style ice cream (creamy texture with no eggs) in OKC since 2012 when it first started doing business out of a food truck. A few years and thousands of scoops later, it now also operates out of traditional brick and mortar stores, one at 1732 NW 16th St. in the Plaza District and the other at 6150 NW Grand Blvd., Suite B, in The Triangle at Classen Curve. Besides serving up their frozen treats in a cone or in the traditional float or sundae, Roxy’s also offers a treat that many of their competitors do not: a cookie sandwich made with two chocolate chip cookies and a single scoop of either cookies and cream, vanilla bean, or pistachio ice cream. A crowd pleaser for sure!
