If you are someone who enjoys running, whether it’s for exercise or for the adrenaline rush of competing against other runners, or just simply to enjoy the great outdoors, the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon will be something you will definitely want to check out.
The OKC Memorial Marathon, considered one of the top marathons in the country, started in 2001 as a fundraiser for the Oklahoma City National Memorial and state-of-the-art Memorial Museum, a place that tells the stories of the 169 people killed in the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, as well as those who survived that horrendous and life-changing event.
The OKC Memorial Marathon has attracted thousands upon thousands of runners and spectators from every state in the nation and several countries. Its mission is to honor the memories of those killed in the bombing and unite the world in hope.
On April 30, full marathon runners will traverse a 26.2-mile course through several communities, neighborhoods and parks as spectators line the course to cheer on their family members and friends, and participants they may not know. People who want to participate in the marathon but don’t necessarily want to run the full marathon, there are other events planned throughout the Memorial Marathon weekend, including a 5K, a Senior Marathon and the Kids Marathon Saturday morning, April 29, as well as other events throughout the day such as the Health & Fitness Expo. The Relay and Half Marathon are also scheduled for Sunday as part of the full Marathon, followed the Finish Line Festival at Scissortail Park from 8:30 a.m. until noon.
