As we inch closer to closing the book on 2022, we thought it would be a great time to check in on the progress of MAPS 4.
For a quick recap, the fourth iteration of the MAPS sales tax initiative was passed by Oklahoma City voters in December 2019 with nearly 72% of the vote. The temporary one-cent tax started getting collected on April 1, 2020, and will end in 2028, and is projected to raise $1.1 billion. MAPS 4 is a unique evolution of the program as the first to focus heavily on human needs such as battling homelessness, addiction, mental health, family justice and more. You can find a full list of MAPS 4 projects here.
The MAPS 4 committee will host a series of public open-house events to gather input for the parks. Residents are invited to share ideas on improvements to 105 community and neighborhood parks across Oklahoma City as part of MAPS 4. Community input will guide consultants as they develop a master plan and assess current park conditions, accessibility, and potential expansion needs for neighborhood and community parks around Oklahoma City. Some of the meetings have already taken place but there are still a few more you can attend to provide input. You can get more information about the various meetings here.
Earlier this fall, the Oklahoma City Council voted to select the Boys and Girls Club of Oklahoma County (BGCOC) as the operator of the MAPS 4 Youth Centers. The $118 million MAPS 4 project includes at least four new youth centers and funds for operations and long-term maintenance. In partnership with BGCOC, the centers will provide afterschool and summer programming in state-of-the-art facilities designed specifically for Oklahoma City youth of all ages and provide meaningful support and intervention for children in need.
