To conclude our trek across the surrounding Oklahoma City metropolitan area, we’re following the compass needle westward to visit neighboring cities. Let’s take a trip to discover the sights and sounds of all there is to offer west of OKC.
Bethany
With its rich history along the origins of Route 66, residents and visitors are treated to a scene of unique buildings and local landmarks. Street art is alive and well throughout the city with murals illustrating the city roots, mixed with abstract patterns and modern compositions. If shopping is your thing, Bethany has a variety of antique shops and galleries that will be worth the visit. Local bars and eateries come together for the Bethany 66 Festival – a public, summer annual event filled with live shows and entertainment. Bethany is the epitome of a small city full of charm and appreciation.
Yukon
The road along historic Route 66 resumes in Yukon. Renowned landmarks such as the Yukon Mill and Lake Overholser Bridge are a must-see for every visitor. If we didn’t mention street art enough – murals commemorating Route 66 and welcome billboards set up popular backdrops for photos. Get in touch with nature for a walk and picnic at Chisholm Trail Park and Mulvey Pond. The holiday season is here, and so is Christmas in the Park – Oklahoma’s largest drive-thru light show right in central Yukon. Also, plan a stop at the Express Clydesdales Barn to get a close view of these rare, massive thoroughbreds. Annual festivals to mention in Yukon are the Czech Festival and Chisholm Trail Festival (both held in early fall).
El Reno
The impression when making the trip to El Reno feels like opening a history book. The preserved railroad trails remain as a running trolley system – the Heritage Express Trolley is the only rail-based service available in Oklahoma. The open land is prime for those who love the great outdoors. Lake El Reno is the city’s largest outdoor recreation spot, with nearby city parks and golf courses available to expand your love of nature. The development of the city brings upon attractions for entertainment as Lucky Star Casino is the place to test your luck at the slots or catch a live performance. We would be doing a disservice to the people of El Reno if we left our west-side journey on an empty stomach. Mark your calendar, come hungry and smell all the goodness at the annual Fried Onion Burger Day Festival (in May).
