Kids can camp out at Oklahoma Contemporary this summer. The contemporary art museum provides weeklong camps for kids of ages 5 to 12. These studio experiences include everything from painting, drawing, sculpture, and ceramics to performance, costume design, and animation. Each camp is instructed by an experienced art educator who tailors courses to compliment the current exhibitions on view at the museum.
Art+Tech, supported by Google, will tie together art and technology each week, allowing students to imagine new possibilities for their projects through experimentation. The camp will also allow for underprivileged students to take part by providing scholarships. Applications can be found on Oklahoma Contemporary’s website.
Other camps offered by Oklahoma Contemporary will cover a broad range of artistic interests:
- Back to Nature – children create playful animal and nature pieces, inspired by John Newsom: Nature’s Course, a current exhibition at the museum, while learning about a different animal habitat each day.
- Are You Surreal? – a conceptual camp on the history surrealism, incorporating contemporary art practices while creating a large-scale collage self-portrait.
- Contemporary Tales – campers create their own play, learning performance tactics, character creation, and set and prop design throughout the week – then perform for family and friends in the Camp Contemporary Showcase.
- ROCK Camp – campers come together to form their very own musical montage, then perform for family and friends at the end of the week showcase.
- Robot Outbreak! – This camp keeps campers attention by building their own robot costume.
A complete list of camps can be found on the Oklahoma Contemporary website.
Collective Care is a childcare service offered by the summer series. Childcare can be provided before and after normal camp hours, allowing children to continue their artistic endeavors throughout the day by creating small projects, playing board games, reading books, or watching age-appropriate television. Studio assistants oversee the service.
Weekly camps are $235. An additional $75 is required if you choose Collective Care. 4-day week camps are available for $190, with an additional $60 per week to add Collective Care.
Registration for camps and Collective Care is currently open, with deadlines one week in advance of each camp week.
