Did you know one in 10 employees in the Oklahoma City region are employed because of the aerospace industry? Did you know only 2% of total employment here is due to the energy industry? While outsiders (and some longtime residents) think of the Oklahoma City economy as being dependent on the energy industry, it is incredibly diverse. Oklahoma City consistently has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country and our diverse economy is no small reason. Below are some of the sectors fueling our impressive economic climate:
- Aerospace: this sector produces $3.4 billion in income every year.
- Biotech: while OKC isn’t thought of as a traditional biotech hub this industry employs around 30,000 in our region.
- Energy: as we said earlier, the energy sector doesn’t employ as many in our region as most think, but it still is an essential fabric of our community.
- Government: being a state capital means more than 130,000 people here are employed in a government job.
- Healthcare: one of OKC’s fastest-growing sectors, around 83,000 healthcare workers are in Oklahoma City.
- Advanced Manufacturing: Oklahoma City is home to nearly 1,300 advanced manufacturing companies and those companies employ 34,000 people.
