Oklahoma’s location east of the Rocky Mountains and north of the Gulf of Mexico means that we are sometimes a hot spot for some interesting weather. Cold dry air from the Rocky Mountains and Canada has the potential to gather over our state with warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico, sometimes resulting in thunderstorms or even more severe weather including tornadoes. And like other states that have the potential for severe weather, here in Oklahoma, we are pretty well prepared for what Mother Nature might throw our way. Preparation is paramount – today, we’re here to guide you on how to get a storm shelter.
(1) Determine the best placement for the storm shelter to be installed on your property.
(2) Read the requirements carefully and follow permit guidelines. The section to pay close attention to is Plan Requirements. If the chosen space for the storm shelter is in the interior/exterior of the house, refer to those specific steps. Have a notepad and tape measure handy to record area spaces and necessary distances with intended location of the storm shelter (Quick tip: No architecture expertise necessary – a neatly drafted plan on regular copy paper with accurate measurements would work just fine.).
(3) Verify your plan document is correct and complete the permit application. Fees are set and listed on The City of Oklahoma City webpage. Upload and submit your application, plan document and fees online or submit them in person at The City of Oklahoma City Development Services for the residential building permit.
(4) With an approved building permit on hand, consult with a local storm shelter installation vendor for price quotes and timeline. Select your business of choice for the install and schedule an appointment (Another tip: Ask about rebate programs or other incentives!).
(5) On the day of installation, be present to discuss details with personnel prior to construction. On average, a typical storm shelter installation time is half to full day.
(6) Once the storm shelter is installed, register with the city.
Find an exterior storm shelter from a retailer? Chances are permit requirements will be the same as above. Refer to a product specialist and/or city representative for guidelines.
If there is no storm shelter available, the common rule is to get to the inner-most room, hallway or closet on the lowest level of your house or building. Safety helmets are good to have if handy, along with blankets and flashlights.
If you think a storm shelter will be a space hog or burden to your time and property, think again! On the contrary, having a storm shelter is a sought-out benefit for home buyers in Oklahoma with property values increasing for sellers. The upfront, out-of-pocket cost will certainly pay for itself.
