Each year, the Oklahoma City National Memorial hosts its annual Run to Remember marathon. Last year, the event was postponed until October, but this year the race will be back on the streets of OKC in April. If you have yet to sign up, head on over to okcmarathon.com. There are options for a variety of distances over a full weekend (April 23-24) celebrating life as we reach for the future, honoring the memories of those killed in the 1995 bombing, and uniting the world in hope.
The OKC Marathon was voted a “must-run marathon” by Runner’s World magazine. In addition to being a well-routed course that brings participants through many important city neighborhoods, this race is packed with spectator support. It’s also a Boston-qualifying USATF sanctioned event. As a way to ensure everyone gains a sense of the importance of Why We Run, the race begins with 168 seconds of silence to honor those killed in the 1995 bombing.
New this year is the OKC Memorial Marathon podcast. In each episode, released weekly, host Kristin Fares has conversations with runners, trainers and community members who discuss everything race related, including the latest updates, the course, achieving your running goals and a segment about Why We Run.
If you aren’t a runner and walking just isn’t your thing, you can still participate in the weekend of events through volunteering. After you register to volunteer, you will be assigned a committee based upon your preferences and availability. With so many ways to contribute, serving as a volunteer is a great way to make an impact and meaningfully engage with the Oklahoma City community.
