Looking for a unique experience as you make your holiday plans this season? Consider booking a weekend to visit Robbers Cave State Park in the town of Wilburton, Oklahoma. This southeastern Oklahoma gem is full of scenic adventure—and history!
According to the legends, outlaws and bandits used to hide in the caverns and ravines in this area. One of which is the famous Jesse James, whose initials can be found etched into the rocks.
Hop on an ATV, lace up your hiking boots, or saddle up a horse as you explore the 8,246-acre park. Robbers Cave State Park’s 250-acre ATV riding area is open from 8 a.m. until sunset each day. The park is also a great place for swimming during the warmer months, and fishing and kayaking year-round.
As if that’s not enough to get your outdoor enthusiast packed up and out on the road east, Robbers Cave is a climber’s paradise. The park is home to some of the coolest sandstone rocks and cliffs that you can find across the nation. If you are not an avid climber, it’s best to bring along someone who can show you the ropes. There are no permanent anchors set in the park, so if you plan on climbing, you will have to set your own.
During your visit, you can stay in a campsite, yurt, lake hut, lodge, or cabin. So, yes, all your camping and glamping dreams can come true here. With 189 combined lake acres, a room (or tent) with a view is always accessible. Especially accommodating for those who can’t leave their furry friends at home, pets are welcome in the park and there are specific cabins and accommodation options that are pet-friendly.
Since many people don’t like to cook while on vacation, it’s fortunate that the town of Wilburton is home to one of the tastiest cafes in the state! Maw and Pa’s Country Café has a generous menu of country-style, made from scratch comfort food. Best known for their chicken-fried steak, they also serve BBQ brisket that’s been slow-cooked for 14 hours, fried pork chops, deep-fried burritos, and just about every other item you might imagine would belong to a place with a name like Maw and Pa’s.
Each year around October, the Robbers State Park fall festival is held. It draws in 80,000 visitors, 200 arts and crafts vendors, and over 500 classic cars. It’s something you’ll want to return for if you have yet to attend. Learn more about Robbers Cave State Park and everything it has to offer on Travel Oklahoma’s website.
