Oklahoma City has a deep history when it comes to our love for horses. Early on in our statehood (and even before we became a state), horses became an integral part of the livelihood of our residents.
Horse ownership boomed in 1927, according to the Oklahoma Historical Society’s records. During that year, farmers, ranchers, and breeders owned 565,000 horses and 365,000 mules. The breeding industry became important during that time, and even during the Great Depression, numbers of horses and mules continued to increase as individuals relied on literal horsepower when heavy machinery became unaffordable.
Today, Oklahoma City still takes pride in the equine industry. Sometimes called the “Horse Show Capital of the World,” we offer more equine events than any other city on an international scale. Our long-standing history with the American Quarter Horse Association, along with multiple other equestrian organizations, has led us to be a well-respected place for horses and their owners.
Our State Fair Park offers a state-of-the-art venue, allowing for the best of the best to visit OKC and revel in the nine well-kept barns, VIP RV parking, exercise areas, and meeting facilities. Throughout 2021, the State Fair Park has hosted over twelve horse-related events, and there are still more before the year ends!
During the month of November, Quarter Horses will rule the fairgrounds with the AQHA World Championship show, which lasts until November 20th. As soon as they finish their events, the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) will take over the grounds from Nov. 25- Dec. 4 for the NRHA Futurity & Adequan Championship Show, one of the most elite reining events in the world with more than $2 million in purse and prizes. More than 20 countries represented throughout this feature event with over 700 three-year-old horses competing for the Futurity Champion title.
In addition to State Fair Park, Remington Park is also known for its horse-racing entertainment! Throughout the year, they offer horse racing live and in person. Right now, it’s thoroughbred season at Remington and they have races most Mondays, Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from now until mid-December.
If you want to feel the excitement of live racing, get out to Remington Park.
