Who doesn’t love a quick trip away from the city every once in a while? If that’s what you’re searching for, look no further and make a journey north to Fairview, Oklahoma!
Fairview, Oklahoma is located in Major County. It’s northwest of the city, about an hour and forty-minute drive from the city center. There are several notable things about this Oklahoma town, one is its collection of genealogical resources at the Major County Historical Society Museum.
The museum opened in 1985 and has been an outstanding example of history and heritage for the surrounding community. On 160 acres, it offers a more in-depth experience than your typical museum with two churches from Ames, Oklahoma; a sawmill; and a one-room schoolhouse on their grounds. They offer free admission, guided tours, and content suitable for all ages.
Another unique treasure of the town exists in Gloss Mountain State Park. The Gloss Mountains have a high Selenite content that mimics a shiny glass exterior. It’s a great place to take a sunrise or sunset hike up and around Cathedral Mountain. The park doesn’t offer camping options, but has a restroom, pavilions, picnic areas, grills and public water supply. If you are set on camping, Gloss Mountain Outfitters is a short drive away where you can set up at a tent site or bring your own RV. Not far away, the Newton Ranch also offers tons of activities like horseback riding, hayrides, hiking and fishing.
Fairview is also home to Plymouth Valley Cellars, a 4.5 acre vineyard and winery, and John’s Farm, a place where bakers can stock up on organic whole wheat flour and other homegrown organic products.
Soon, the town will host two traditional holiday events—a Home for the Holidays Craft Show and a Lighted Holiday Parade. On November 27, head to the Major County Fairgrounds to browse a variety of vendor booths with handmade items including soy blend candles, wooden Christmas decorations, handcrafted wood chests, jewelry, furniture, home decor and gifts. If you’re feeling inspired to make a second trip to Fairview on December 4, you can check out the holiday parade, which weaves through downtown Fairview, spreading Christmas cheer.
