Metropolitan Area Projects (MAPS) is a series of sales-tax initiatives that have transformed Oklahoma City’s quality of life, rebuilt schools and invested heavily in community issues since the first MAPS passed nearly 30 years ago. If you are new to our great community and need some background on the program we’ve written about it a lot (it is sort of a big deal around here). Click here for a brief history of the program.
The latest iteration of MAPS (MAPS 4) passed with a landslide 71.7% of the vote on Dec. 10, 2019. The temporary one-cent tax started getting collected on April 1, 2020 and will end in 2028 and is projected to raise $978 million. MAPS 4 is a unique evolution of the program as the first to focus heavily on human needs like battling homeliness, addiction, mental health, family justice and more. You can find a full list of MAPS 4 projects here.
One key tenant of all MAPS programs is projects do not start construction until the money has been collected. That means everything built by MAPS is debt-free but the downside is it can take a little longer for buildings to be constructed. Don’t let the lack of dirt moving make you think progress is not happening though. The MAPS 4 Citizen Advisory Board began meeting last summer and has been hard at work starting to develop timelines and development plans. The City is also taking applications for the subcommittees who will oversee each project’s implementation. You can apply here.
