If you love gardening and want to enhance your green thumb with new tips and gardening best practices, you should check out OSU Extension’s offerings.
OSU Extension educates Oklahomans through research-based methodology to improve lives and communities across our state. Many of their programs focus on topics related to human and animal health, and they have events on a nearly daily basis in multiple locations to foster education for individuals of all ages.
With a combination of free and paid programs and vast online resources, OSU Extension provides learning access to people at a range of time, interest, and financial commitment levels.
Events and Programs
A full list of their events can be found here. You can sign up for classes like “Backyard Herb Gardening” or “Growing Container Vegetables.” Courses are run all over the state, so even if you live outside the OKC area, you will likely find an option close to you.
One of their most popular programs for gardeners who are ready to devote significant time and energy into their practice and want to share their passion with others is the Oklahoma Master Gardener Program. It brings individuals through a series of courses, which provide a minimum of 45 hours of instruction. Following the instruction period, students will take a comprehensive exam and begin volunteering within their community through the 45-56 hour internship portion of the program. You can learn more about the Master Gardener program here.
Virtual Education
If you are unable to attend any of their in-person program options, they also offer education from the comfort of your home. You can watch Oklahoma Gardening on Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. on OETA stations and on OETA throughout the week.
The OSU Extension’s website houses several helpful guides to help you get planting and growing in no time! The Oklahoma Garden Planning Guide is a wonderful resource to start with if you want to make sure your vegetable garden thrives.
If you have a specific question about your garden and want someone to help resolve your issue, consider submitting a question to the “Ask an Expert” section of the website. It allows you to submit an explanation of the problem you are dealing with and include photos, if needed. An expert will typically respond to you within three business days. If you can’t figure out the best way to get rid of those pesky weeds invading your soil, or you want suggestions for the best perennial to put in your sunny flower garden, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Ensure your garden thrives year-round by taking advantage of the resources you have through OSU’s Extension services.
