May is a historically notable month for severe weather in Oklahoma. Given our state’s central location, spring time tends to mix up a grand cocktail of temperatures and weather thanks to the shifting patterns across the Americas. Warm, humid air comes up from the Caribbean and cooler air comes down from Canada, creating swirling and strong storms. Though the natural phenomena can be fascinating to witness from afar, the storms can be powerfully destructive and potentially harmful if you aren’t well prepared.
One of the easiest ways to keep yourself and loved ones safe is to invest in a safe room or storm shelter. Construction of a safe room can range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on the size, location, and structure you choose.
In Oklahoma City, you must apply for a building permit in advance of the installation of your shelter. The permits cost $53.50 for an in-ground or slope-top shelter, and $70.50 if you opt for an above ground safe room. Some areas outside of Oklahoma City do not require a permit, but it is best to check local guidelines for your area before you begin any new build.
Additionally, OKC and other area municipalities have a Storm Shelter Registry in order to help first responders in the event of a major event, so be sure to get yours on the appropriate roll!
What are the different safe room options?
There are three popular options to choose from when deciding on your safe room. Many individuals choose an in-ground shelter, located in their garage. This option is popular for families without accessibility limitations who don’t want to exit the building in order to make it to their safe space. A slope-top shelter is generally built outside of the home in the back or front yard and is made of concrete. This option is also a good choice for individuals who have no mobility limitations.
For those who want wheel-chair accessibility to the shelter, an above-ground steel safe room is the best option. It’s also a great option for those who want the job done fast. Because the shelters are complete before they make it to your home, it generally takes about an hour to install.
Is construction cost an issue? Apply for the Oklahoma Safe Room Rebate Program
If you own a home without a storm shelter, you are eligible to apply for a storm shelter rebate through the Oklahoma Safe Room Rebate Program. The program was developed in 2011 to help provide individuals with a rebate of a maximum of $2,000 and no more than 75% of the cost of a safe room’s construction on their private residential property.
The rebate is given through a lottery system where individuals are randomly selected on an annual basis to receive the funds. Once you’ve submitted your information, your eligibility will continue indefinitely, but you must update your profile with any chance of address.
Additional details of this program can be found here.
Why should I build a shelter?
Beyond personal protection, building a storm shelter can significantly increase the value of your home. Some individuals appreciate the safety an above-ground shelter offers not only from storms, but also in the rare event an intruder enters your home. The benefits to storm shelter ownership are similar to insurance, ensuring you can sleep soundly knowing that in the event of a disaster, you’ll be better off.
