Have you ever been on the back of an adrenaline-filled 2,000-lb animal? The professional bull riders visiting Oklahoma City on April 17-18th for “Unleash the Beast” in Chesapeake Energy Arena certainly have!
Bull riding is the most popular event in rodeo today. With 8 seconds on the clock, the rider must remain on the bull with only one hand on the rope. If the rider survives all 8 seconds without falling off, they will receive a score of up to 100 points. According to the official rules shared by the Professional Bull Riders, half of the points come from the bull and half come from the rider. If a ride scores 90 points or more, it’s a huge feat! The highest score that has ever been received is 96.5 points and is shared by three riders: Bubba Dunn, Chris Shivers and Michael Gaffney. Four judges watch the speedy and demanding rides, each with the ability to allot 25 points to the bull and 25 points to the rider. The sum of all points is divided by two to determine the rider’s final score.
On Saturday, April 17th at 6:45 p.m. and Sunday, April 18th at 1:45 p.m., the nation’s elite professional bull riders will be competing here in our city. Bull riding is a powerful, strength-defining sport, which has grown in popularity at a significantly higher rate than any other of the seven traditional rodeo events (bull riding, bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, team roping, and barrel racing).
