Fishing is a classic pastime and one of the easiest ways to spend hours outdoors. As warmer temperatures and sunshine begin to fill our spring days, we are looking for more opportunities to get outside!
In Oklahoma, there are several native freshwater fish, many of which can be found in your nearest lake. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife offers a comprehensive list of the most common fish species.
You’ve likely heard of the Largemouth Bass, Channel Catfish, and Bluegill, but have you seen Oklahoma’s prehistoric underwater beast, the Paddlefish? If you are interested in having a more unique fishing experience, you may want to include a free paddlefish permit when you sign up for your state fishing license. Learn more about fishing for paddlefish here.
Alright! Are you feeling inspired? Here are the steps you need to take in order to have a successful day of fishing:
-
Make sure you obtain the correct fishing license and/or permit.
Costs of licenses vary based on your age, residency, location, and length of use. You can get a lifetime of fishing in Oklahoma for $225. If you’d rather pay on an annual basis, the cost is $25 per year for individuals between the ages of 18-65.
For all state license and permit costs, see the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife’s options. If you are fishing within OKC City limits and are between the ages of 16-61, you may also need a city permit.
-
Find a place to fish!
There are many fishing options in the OKC area. Our largest lakes are Hefner, Lake Overholser, and Lake Stanley Draper, but these are not the only places to plan your next big catch! Find a list of fishing locations in OKC here.
If you are open to exploring the waters located a short drive away from the city, this resource shows Oklahoma’s best places to visit based on the species you want to catch, and this article provides a list of 5 of Oklahoma’s best spots for fishing, in general.
-
Determine the fishing equipment and bait you’ll need.
Just as important as getting to the lake (or river) is making sure you have the proper equipment. Many species can be caught with a fishing pole and simple earthworm bait, but with the intent of attracting a specific type of fish, you may want to be more selective with your choices.

-
Pack the essentials and make your way to the water.
Once you’re ready to get out there, you’ll want to be sure you have all of the gear you need for a positive overall experience. Snacks, cold beverages, and extra sunscreen and bug spray can help make sure your spirits don’t drop lower than the tide.
It is important to remember to bring your license and/or permit(s), extra fishing line, a measuring tape to ensure your fish is within regulations, towels in case you get splashed, pliers for difficult-to-remove hooks, and a first-aid kit for the unexpected.
Once you’ve reeled one in, make sure to snap a photo and submit it to “The Dock”. The rest of Oklahoma will be excited to share in the glory of your awesome catch—no matter the size!
