Let’s face it: Dogs have lived their best lives while we’ve all been staying safe at home. They’ve become the stars of virtual meetings. They’ve been on so many walks they’ve forgotten about afternoon naps. (Though their lives haven’t been as good as all the penguins in the U.S., who have been exploring museums and aquariums.)
And sure, cats have been around, too. But they’re probably not enjoying your company as much.
Now, if you feel like you’re missing out on this furry companionship, there’s no better time to adopt a new friend from Oklahoma City Animal Welfare. You’ll be home more often to help train it and get it used to life at your house.
OKC Animal Welfare is offering adoptions only by appointment to protect public health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adoption fees will remain cut in half to $30 to help ensure homeless pets are still adopted as the shelter enters its busy season.
To make an appointment, visit okcawadoptions.youcanbook.me. Then you simply pick a time, and confirm your appointment with your name, email address and phone number. If you don’t have internet access, call (405) 297-3100 to schedule an appointment. Appointments will be every 15 minutes from noon to 5 p.m.

Whether you’re getting a new dog or yours has already taken many trips around your block, don’t forget to put it on a leash. Per ordinance, every dog in Oklahoma City must be confined on your property or on a leash. Dog parks are a limited exception and there are a few around the city, including at the new Scissortail Park. Dogs that are allowed to run free – especially when out at city parks – can be a threat to children or other dogs. Yes, your little Fido is sweet and friendly to everyone, but you never know how another dog might react or if a new environment can cause your furry best friend to act differently. There’s more information about leashing your dog on the city’s website or you can click this link.
