As the number of homebrewers showing off the fruits of their fermenters at the recent Oklahoma Craft Beer Festival at the Cox Center can attest, homebrewing is becoming quite the hobby in OKC. If you think you may want to give it a try but are intimidated by the terminology and process, don’t be! The easiest thing to do is go talk to some experts. Greater OKC Chamber member The Brew Shop, 2916 N. Penn, would be a great choice to hit up to de-mystify the process. After all, the famous Reinheitsgebot, or “German Beer Purity Law,” restricts beer to only three ingredients: water, barley and hops. That’s really all you need (and a few easy-to-obtain pieces of equipment). If you want to get creative, Oklahoma’s wealth of agricultural products make brewing with locally sourced ingredients, like fruit and honey, even more interesting if you so desire. Why not give it a shot? After all, beer is like pizza: even when it’s bad, it’s still pretty good.
