One of our city’s awesome districts worth seeking out, Automobile Alley, is easily accessible. Located downtown and just north of the central business district, it sports enough retail, dining, coffee and arts establishments to “drive” you to a new state of urban bliss. Contrary to the name, you don’t have to take a car, truck or an Explorer to explore this neon-lit, flourishing part of our city’s past, present and future.
Why is it called Automobile Alley? As you cruise past the brick storefonts and concrete- and stone-cast architecture you might notice signs reading “Buick,” “Vesper,” “Pontiac,” “Hudson,” and more. That’s because in the teens and 20s, this was home to more than 50 of OKC’s first “horseless carriage” dealerships, as well as other car service companies. (Luxury makes and Smart cars are still sold in the area today.) Pretty cool, eh?
And as if we haven’t piqued your curiosity enough, we’ve got a great feature in our VeloCity e-magazine on the district. Check it out, then put your right foot on the floor and head down to Auto Alley!
