On Nov. 16, Oklahoma will celebrate its 106th birthday, marking the day it became the 46th state to enter the union (and we gotta say, Oklahoma is looking pretty good for a centenarian). Here are some ideas if you want to party hard for Oklahoma’s birthday.
Host a dinner party. Did you know that Oklahoma’s official state meal is fried okra, squash, cornbread, barbeque pork, biscuits, sausage & gravy, grits, corn, strawberries, chicken fried steak, black-eyed peas, and pecan pie? We don’t recommend eating this meal every day, but it sounds like the perfect dinner party fare. Be sure to send us an invite.
Sign up for some Oklahoma-themed karaoke. Sure, you could stick to the classic state song of Oklahoma! but don’t stop there. Oklahoma also claims Faded Love, Do You Realize??, Oklahoma Hills and Oklahoma Wind as its other state tunes.
Go on a nature walk. Head over to Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge and see if you can spot any of Oklahoma’s state flora and fauna. White-tailed deer, scissor-tailed flycatchers, redbud trees, mistletoe and Indian blanket wildflowers all make the list as some of Oklahoma’s most iconic images. If you are lucky, you might even find a rose rock, rare petal-shaped rocks that are only found in Oklahoma.
