The Skirvin Hilton, in partnership with the Paseo Arts Association, chose Oklahoma City artist Romy Owens as its first Artist-in-Residence. Her live studio space is open to hotel guests and visitors. She shared why she chose to stay in Oklahoma City and some of her favorite things around town.
Talk about your art. How would you describe it?
Reconstructed photographs, hand sewn meticulously into unrecognizable abstract compositions.
Why did you choose to plant roots in Oklahoma City after graduation, instead of another city?
I still live in Oklahoma City because of our tremendously supportive art community.
What is your favorite gallery in OKC to visit?
I can’t answer this question, because there are so many wonderful options. One I really like is City Arts Center because they bring amazing art to OKC that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to see, and the gallery is free and open to the public.
Describe your perfect day in OKC:
A perfect day in Oklahoma City is any day in spring or fall when the air is crisp and the sky is bright, and I have participated in all three of the following activities: a productive day in my studio, a delicious dinner at one of OKC’s amazing locally-owned restaurants and an art event (either visual or performing) that inspires me.
