Each spring break, parents look for ways to treat their children to a week of nonstop fun and a true escape from school. Many families flock to overcrowded beaches and other big-name destinations across the U.S. — or beyond — unaware that an unforgettable spring break can be found much closer to home. Nestled in the middle of the country and just a short drive from many major cities, Oklahoma City offers endless thrills, incredible dining and inviting lodging across its diverse districts.
Head Downtown
Your family could make a whole trip just out of what’s on offer in the center of OKC! Scissortail Park is an urban oasis in the heart of downtown. Between open fields, a splash pad, multiple basketball, pickleball and futsal courts, and more, there is no shortage of outdoor fun to be had. Next door, the Myriad Botanical Gardens & Crystal Bridge is a great spot for a short walk and some family photo ops. Over in Bricktown, the Bricktown Water Taxi is the perfect way to cruise through one of OKC’s top entertainment districts and learn more about the history of the city.
Hotels like The National, Colcord, Omni, Skirvin and Renaissance offer style and comfort for the whole crew and sit within walking distance of these top spots and more in the downtown core.
Expand Your Horizons
For some of the latest additions to OKC’s ever-growing line-up of attractions, head to the Horizons District! The newly opened OKANA Resort & Indoor Waterpark offers endless fun for the whole family. While the outdoor lagoon won’t be open during spring break, the massive 100,000 square feet indoor waterpark is open year-round, providing the perfect place to slide and splash the day away. While there, check out the on-site arcade, OKANARAMA!, relax at The Spa at OKANA and try all the restaurants both inside and outside the resort. Plus, if you stay the night at the resort, all-day admission to the indoor waterpark is included!
While in the district, take the family to the First Americans Museum to explore the histories of the 39 First American tribes that call Oklahoma home. The newly opened FAMily Discovery Center is full of fun hands-on experiences for kids to help immerse them in the culture of First American tribes. Additionally, the reopened 39 Restaurant offers delectable native-inspired dishes that are sure to delight everyone’s taste buds.
Seek Adventure
Some of OKC’s most adventure-filled spots can be found in the aptly named Adventure District. For those looking to step into the history of the American West, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is the place to go. Their new exhibit, The Cowboy: An Immersive Journey offers a 40-minute immersive show that takes you through the evolution of cowboy culture and the many ways it continues to thrive today. That same narrative permeates the museum’s expansive exhibits, including its interactive Prosperity Junction and Liichokoshkomo experiences that are perfect for kids.
For the animal lovers and budding biologists in the family, look no further than the Oklahoma City Zoo. There you’ll stroll through 110 acres of naturalistic habitats for a wide variety of animals. You can also purchase tickets for various experiences, including feedings and up-close encounters with giraffes, tortoises and more. Additionally, opening March 6, the new Dinosaur Expedition promises thrills and fun-filled learning for your little paleontologists.
Finally, if chemistry, physics or astronomy are more your family’s speed, Science Museum Oklahoma promises a whole lot of fun! Between the new world-class Love’s Planetarium, an expanse of kid-friendly, hands-on exhibits and a rotating lineup of daily Science Live! shows, there are many thrills to be had by the whole crew.
Get Your Kicks in OKC
For the uninitiated, 2026 marks 100 years since Route 66 was established, and as the center point in Oklahoma’s 400 miles of the route, Oklahoma City is a prime spot for your family to explore the mother road this spring break.
Aside from the aforementioned Adventure District, OKC’s stretch of Route 66 runs through many of the city’s diverse districts. Head over to the Asian District for a photo op in front of the iconic Milk Bottle Grocery before trying one of the district’s many incredible restaurants like Cafe Kacao, Golden Phoenix and Ling Long. Next, check out the Uptown 23rd District. Get lunch or dinner at Cheever's Cafe, a long-standing OKC staple, then make your way to the Oklahoma State Capitol for a guided (or self-guided) tour of the stunning art collection housed within. Finally, head up to Lake Overholser and Route 66 Park for a picnic or a nice walk with the family in the beautiful spring weather. While there, make sure to see the Overholser Bridge, a historic steel truss bridge that used to be part of the Mother Road.
All of this is just a taste of everything Oklahoma City has to offer your family this spring break. Find out more on our Spring Break Guide!
