Oklahoma City residents can access far more than books with a free card from the Metropolitan Library System. Across its 19 locations, the system offers digital media, technology access, research tools and everyday-use items that can help families save money, build new skills or simply make life a little easier.
Residents with a library card can borrow from more than 1.5 million physical and digital items, including books, audiobooks, movies, music and magazines available for checkout or download. Through apps like Libby and Hoopla, users can stream movies, read eBooks or listen to audiobooks at home without paying for additional subscription services.
In addition to entertainment, library cardholders can access online learning platforms, job preparation resources and research databases that support everything from academic coursework to career advancement. Library locations also provide public computers, software and internet access, along with the ability to reserve study rooms or meeting space for collaborative work, tutoring sessions or community gatherings.
Beyond traditional materials, some branches offer nontraditional items such as garden tools and Discovery Backpacks designed for outdoor exploration and family learning. Residents who may have difficulty visiting a branch in person can still access materials through Library by Mail and community outreach services offered throughout the community.
Throughout the year, the system hosts classes, workshops and public events across all 19 locations, covering topics ranging from financial literacy and workforce readiness to creative arts and lifelong learning opportunities.
As subscription costs continue to rise, these free services offer Oklahoma City residents an additional way to access entertainment, technology and skill-building resources without increasing monthly expenses.
