Earth Day is the annual celebration of our planet. It’s also a reminder that we need to protect its natural resources, air, water and soil. Saving the world may sound like a tall task for just one person, but there are many simple steps you can take to help make our planet a healthier place:
- Plant trees, wildflowers or native plants.
- Participate in a community cleanup event.
- Install a smart thermostat to lower energy consumption.
- Switch to LED lightbulbs which last 100 times longer than traditional light bulbs.
- Seal air and water leaks in your home to improve efficiency.
- Install modern low-flow shower heads, saving carbon emissions, energy costs, and up to 15,000 gallons of water per person per year.
- Learn how to compost.
- Reduce plastic consumption.
- Adopt a sustainable fashion philosophy by shopping secondhand, choosing clothes made with natural or organic fibers, donating unused clothing items, repairing damaged clothing instead of throwing it away and shopping from local vendors.
If you want to learn more about composting, gardening, waste reduction and more, check out the inaugural OKC Beautiful Earth Fest. It’s happening April 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Scissortail Park. The event includes more than 30 vendors, giveaways, an interactive mural installation, kids’ activity area and more.
