In the ongoing story of Oklahoma City's rebirth, few examples of resurgence are as dramatic as that of Deep Deuce. From the 1920s through the 1950s, this downtown section formed the nucleus of the city's African-American cultural and business community, a place pulsating with the jazz of such greats as Charlie Christian, Count Basie and Jimmy Rushing. Then the area fell silent to decades neglect and disrepair.
You'd never know it today, though. Deep Deuce is at the forefront of downtown housing, in addition to boasting the [Artspace] at Untitled art gallery and top-notch restaurants like Sage and The Wedge Pizzeria in Deep Deuce. But Deep Deuce still resonates with its important past, particularly at the Calvary Baptist Church, which has the distinction of once having passed up on hiring a young minister named Martin Luther King Jr.
