Pluck it Up

Feeling like you could use a little more toe-tapping, knee-slapping music in your life? Power up with a plethora of plucking at one of Oklahoma City's unique national treasures, the American Banjo Museum. Celebrating "America's adopted native musical instrument," the museum's collections feature more than 300 banjos, from early primitive models developed by slaves in the old south to more modern examples, including a rare pre-war five-string Gibson.

Associated with many types of music including country, African-American traditional, folk, bluegrass, American old-time and even Irish traditional, the banjo's Bricktown museum home introduces visitors to the wealth of styles and people that have influenced this unique and versatile instrument. Don't know Bela Fleck from three-finger picking? You're in luck, because the museum's introductory exhibits are designed to inform even the beginning banjo brain.

You can visit the museum Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 6pm and on Sundays from noon to 5pm. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors (55+) or students, and $4 for youth ages 5 to 17. Children under 5 are free. Families bringing two adults and two children can visit for $15.
