That is the question that the organizers of Better Block OKC asked the Oklahoma City community as they prepared to transform a block of MidTown for one weekend. Sponsored by the Urban Land Institute Oklahoma, Better Block OKC will reimagine vacant buildings at NW 7th and Hudson into a temporary community hotspot. The "pop-up" shops, art displays and dining areas represent community redevelopment efforts inspired by the ideas of average citizens.

The event runs May 18th from 6 until 10 p.m. through May 19th from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m, coinciding with the H&8th night food market. Volunteers are still needed to create this vibrant community event, especially those with a background in street arts and music, construction projects, gardening, bicycle infrastructure and other creative project ideas. The Greater Oklahoma City Chamber and the South OKC Chamber of Commerce have partnered with the City of Oklahoma City and the Urban Land Institute to find ways to improve and strengthen the I-240 retail corridor, and they need your feedback to create a thriving market in the coming decades.

With six kiosk rental stations in the downtown and MidTown areas, your parking and traffic worries can disappear as you take a relaxing scenic ride through Oklahoma City.

If you don't have a bike, the upcoming launch of Spokies will still let you have fun on two wheels. You can check out a bike seven days a week between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., and the three types of memberships make it easy to choose an affordable rental plan. The Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge, located at the north end of Lake Overholser, is a pristine area of 1,000 acres that has remained unchanged since before statehood. Hiking the area will put you in close contact to whitetail deer, beaver and egrets, not to mention beautiful views of lakes, bottomland forest and marshlands.

Before leaving the area, catch a glimpse of the world's favorite rodent—the prairie dog, of course—at Prairie Dog Town. It's located on the south side of NW 36th Street between Sara Road and Mustang Road. Trust us, their cuteness will add to an already worthwhile excursion.

Things to do & see: May 15 - May 21

Tuesday, May 15
One thing that is quickly moving up the rankings?
Landscaping, home improvement projects and general spring cleaning can leave you with more trash than usual. Thankfully, the folks at the City of Oklahoma City know that sometimes, you've got more than good ol' "big blue" can handle. Each month, Oklahoma City residents have a designated "bulky waste pickup day." Whether you're throwing out some old furniture or have a pile of sticks that's taller than you are, as long as it's no larger than four cubic yards – which they say is about the size of two refrigerators – OKC's waste warriors will make it magically disappear.

"When is my pickup day?" you might ask. Well, that's easy. Check out this map or simply look at your water bill.

There are a few other rules and suggestions regarding bulky waste pickup so before you take that trash to the curb, make sure you've checked this out. And for general info on OKC's other trash and recycling services, check out this handy-dandy guide.

Roses are red

As one of the 12 "must run" races in the world (according to the experts at Runner's World), the race draws thousands of runners from across the nation and world. It is also a special day for the community in Greater Oklahoma City. As the marathon's website states: "We run to give to the Memorial. We run to involve the community, the nation and perhaps the world in the continuing process of coping with the tragedy of the past. We run as a step toward a better future."

This Sunday, whether you have someone special to cheer on or not, check out the course map, grab a lawn chair and park yourself along the course. Celebrate with the runners as they pursue a feat of endurance, and celebrate with the community as we remember a tragedy that forever changed the future of Oklahoma City.

Whether you like fine art or folk music, festival season in Greater Oklahoma City will give you plenty to celebrate.

A time-honored Oklahoma City tradition, the Festival of the Arts takes place in downtown Oklahoma City at the Festival Plaza and the Myriad Botanical Gardens. Since 1967, the Festival has celebrated the visionary, culinary and performing arts in Oklahoma City. On April 24-29, head downtown for Oklahoma City's rite of spring and experience the art from 144 visual artists who work in a variety of mediums. And come to the Festival hungry, because the 31 featured food vendors are ready to make your culinary dreams come true at the International Food Row. Each vendor is partnered with a local arts organization, so each bite you take supports the arts in central Oklahoma. Four music stages will also feature nearly 300 area performers during the festival. Plot your must-see artists with this schedule, or follow the buzz about the Festival on Twitter.

If you would prefer to spend your free time rocking out, the Norman Music Festival (NMF) is the venue for you. This annual three-day music festival was founded in 2008, but it has already made a name for itself as a perfect destination for home-grown music in a variety of genres. With 21 indoor and outdoor stages, NMF features local musicians and national names alike on April 26-28. NMF also includes a one-day art market on April 28. Now at a new location on the 100 block of Main Street, the Dustbowl Arts Market features local handmade art in a family-friendly atmosphere.

On May 4-6, the Downtown Edmond Arts Festival will transform the historic streets of downtown Edmond into an outdoor art gallery. Gifted artists from near and far will be featured in this juried art show that takes place annually on the first weekend in May. The event includes delicious food and great entertainment from local musicians that will appeal to the whole family.

Things to do & see: April 24 - April 30

Tuesday, April 24
With countless organizations and worthwhile causes it can be overwhelming when choosing where to donate your valuable time. Oklahoma City is making it easy for you with a Volunteer Recruitment Fair on April 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Myriad Gardens. You can learn more about various groups, their missions and the opportunities they provide. Many have claimed to spot these elusive beasts before but to this day no hard evidence remains of their existence. We here at The Better Life have breaking news – we can confirm that parking in Downtown not only exists but can be had in abundance. Despite occasional reports to the contrary, there is plenty of parking Downtown; you just have to know where to look. In fact, in most lots in Downtown and Bricktown you can get daily rates for under $5. You'll have better luck finding the Chupacabra than finding another downtown metro with rates that low. However, the most interesting thing about OKC may go all the way back to the city's origins. Oklahoma City is the city that was created in less than a day.

It was precisely noon on April 22, 1889, when the thunderous boom of a cannon signaled the start of the land run that changed central Oklahoma forever. An estimated 150,000 people on horse, wagons, trains, foot and bicycles (yes, bicycles!) raced to stake their claim in the Unassigned Lands of Oklahoma. By the end of the day, out of nothing Oklahoma City was born with 10,000 new residents.

As a side note, many newcomers to our state wonder where the popular chant "Boomer Sooner" originated. Well, the people who waited for the cannon shot to start the Land Run were referred to as Boomers. To many a Boomer's dismay, they found out that a lot of land was taken by those who had "snuck" into the area before the race began, the "Sooners".

Things to Do & See: April 17 - April 23

Tuesday, April 17
Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, killing 168 people and injuring more than 500 others. As a tribute to the victims, family members and survivors of the bombing, Oklahoma City hosts the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon – named as one of the 12 must-run Marathons in the world by Runner's World magazine.

Each April, thousands of Oklahoma City citizens and individuals from around the country and the world gather to run – to involve the community, the nation and the world in the continuing process of coping with the tragedy of the past and as a step toward a better future. But the event is not just for the runners – it's a great opportunity for citizens, business, churches and organizations to show their support for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. From standing along the course cheering on the runners or hosting live music along the course, to opening restroom facilities for the runners or offering food and drink specials to participants, each of us can embrace the race. Visit the Memorial Marathon's website and discover how you can embrace the race this year and display your support for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon.

Why not take a stroll?

The recent rains and warmer temperatures have brought bright green and have coaxed trees and flowers from their winter slumber. There are a number of places around town to take in the spring sights. If you've got a stroll or picnic in mind, here are a few of our favorite places to surround yourself with bright colors and fresh air.

The Oklahoma River
What better way to take in the fresh air than taking a stroll down the shores of the Oklahoma River. With 13 miles of trails on the north and south banks of the river, there's plenty of room to stretch your legs. And once you're done with your walk, head over to the pavilion at Regatta Park for some relaxing in the shade.

Myriad Botanical Gardens
Six months ago, the Myriad Botanical Gardens celebrated its grand reopening after its Project 180 transformation. Located in the middle of downtown Oklahoma City, this 17-acre park is a favorite for citizens and visitors alike. A dog park on the east side of the gardens is the perfect place for an outing with your furry friend, and bring the kids to discover the children's garden. Pathways wind through the gardens, giving you plenty of room to stretch your legs, while dining tables scattered throughout are perfect for al fresco dining and people watching.

Heritage Hills & Mesta Park
Just northwest of downtown Oklahoma City you'll find the historic neighborhoods of Heritage Hills and Mesta Park. Home to many of Oklahoma City's founding elite, these neighborhoods feature a wealth of local history, along with tree-lined streets and deep, green front yards.

While in Heritage Hills, stroll down the sidewalks and take in the sights of the stately houses and "oil mansions." Once you've reach the southwest side of the neighborhood (around NW 13 and Shartel), make sure you don't miss Harn Park. This more than 100-year-old park sits on five acres to the west of the Oklahoma Heritage Museum.

In the center of Mesta Park at NW 19th and Shartel, is Perle Mesta Park – if you haven't guessed it by now, Perle Mesta is both the park and neighborhood's namesake. With nearly 3 acres, the park offers the opportunity to relax in the gazebo, play a little sand volleyball on one of two courts or run free in the open green spaces.

Chesapeake Energy Campus
Located off of Western Avenue, just south of Northwest 63rd Street, Chesapeake Energy's campus is spectacular throughout every season. Now that spring has sprung, the campus is in full bloom. The grounds of the campus are landscaped each season to give Chesapeake's more than 4,600 employees and Oklahoma City citizens a sight that looks more like a park than a corporate campus. With flowering plants and green grasses, along with two tree-lined creeks, you're sure to forget you're in the middle of Oklahoma City.

Nichols Hills
Just a hop, skip and a jump from the Chesapeake Energy campus is the historic Nichols Hills neighborhood. With 31 landscaped parks, you'll discover beautiful landscaping as you take in the serene scenery and majestic homes. The parks are maintained and landscaped by the City of Nichols Hills (that's right – it's its own city) and Nichols Hills Parks, Inc.

Will Rogers Gardens
Located at 3400 NW 36 Street, the Will Rogers Gardens is home to the Ed Lycan Conservatory, the Margaret Annis Boys Arboretum and the Charles E. Sparks Rose Garden, a half-acre rose garden featuring more than 85 different varieties of roses. With rambling trails and walkways, the Gardens give you the opportunity to enjoy one of the most enchanting parks in Oklahoma. Inside the garden walls, you'll discover roses, irises, azaleas, daylilies and peonies, among other colorful plants.

Lake Hefner
Lake Hefner, located in northwest Oklahoma City, is quite possibly one of the best places in the city to take in one of Oklahoma's famous sunsets. This 2,500-acre lake is a watery wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy sailing, fishing, wind-surfing and a variety of other activities. Lucky for you, there's 9.1 miles of biking and jogging trails, along with open green spaces, playgrounds and prime picnic spots, surrounding the lake so you can take in the sights and their adventures while remaining dry.

Edmond
Just north of Oklahoma City is the suburb of Edmond. This residential oasis has a number of great parks – Hafer Park, Mitch Park, Bickham Rudkin Park, just to name a few – with disc golf, trails, playgrounds and more. So take a quick 15 minute jaunt north and discover some of these wide open spaces.

University of Oklahoma Campus
Why not head about 20 miles south on I-35 to the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman? Situated on nearly 4,000 acres, the campus offers a variety of places for a walk or picnic. Head to the east side of campus, just north of Lindsey Avenue and visit Brandt Park, home to the "Duck Pond," or wander among the brick red buildings along both the North and South Ovals – here you'll find open green spaces perfect for an afternoon picnic. Here is where you'll also find a concentration of tulips – a sight that cannot be missed.

Things to Do & See: April 10 - April 16

Tuesday, April 10

Did you know that Oklahoma City's cost of living index is nearly 10 percent lower than the rest of the nation? It might be hard to believe considering all of the amenities we get to experience, but it's true. Let's say you currently earn $50,000 per year in Oklahoma City. If you decided to up and move to Boston (and we don't know why you would), you'd have to earn $75,912 per year just to maintain your current standard of living. It really goes to show that where you live matters – and when you live in OKC, you get to really enjoy your living.

Check out the graph and table below to see how OKC compares to other U.S. cities. For comprehensive Economic Indicator and Regional Data, visit www.greateroklahomacity.com/economicindicators or contact Eric Long, research economist at 405-297-8976 or elong@okcchamber.com.

When it began in 1978 the Prairie Dance Theatre (PDT) was a professional modern dance company. In 2003, they decided to take things in a new direction – and today PDT is an Oklahoma City-based organization that teaches dance to at-risk children ages 7 to 12 for free. Through five dance-based programs at local public schools, PDT teaches dance techniques in creative movement, modern, ballet, jazz, tap, folk and ethnic dance, theater arts and creative writing. Check with your child's school to see if this program is offered.

If you're interested in donating to PDT, cash donations and in-kind donations, such as snacks, dance shoes and shirts for the students can be mailed to:
